Everything you need to know about the deeply personal stand-out from Wilson's third studio album, ‘Stars’.
First teased towards the end of September 2025 and met with a vehement response from fans, Anne Wilson was left with no choice but to release the deeply personal ballad, ‘Carry Me’, a couple of weeks prior to her third studio album, Stars.
It finds the Contemporary Christian and country genre-blender baring her soul, and reflecting on her meteoric ascent over the past seven years or so, but confessing that the pace of life since losing her brother, Jacob, in a car crash has left her feeling older than she is. It's a beautifully poignant offering that concludes with a typically rousing message of faith, with ‘Carry Me’ showcasing Wilson's ability to get strikingly candid with fans, while still lacing her music with hope.
‘Carry Me’ finds Wilson stripping back the composition and showcasing her rich, evocative vocals across an intimate, atmospheric piano. The pared-down instrumental cleverly mirrors the vulnerability and heart-on-her-sleeve nature of the narrative.
The production is kept low-key throughout, with the song building gradually in intensity as Wilson grows more frustrated over the course of the track. Then, as we reach the moving crescendo and are met with a haunting, ethereal choir, the Kentucky native strips it all away once again for a visceral, soul-stirring final iteration of the chorus.
‘Carry Me’ cements Wilson's status as one of the most important and inspiring voices in the intersection between Contemporary Christian music and country music today.
While much of Wilson's discography is devoted to singing the praises of Jesus and celebrating the joy of a life lived with Him at the centre, ‘Carry Me’ serves as a snapshot into the darker nights where the weight of the world feels too heavy to bear.
Wilson expresses how jaded she has grown since her brother passed away, when she was just 15. It was the moment she sung at his funeral that first propelled her into the spotlight, with Wilson's musical career taking off shortly after. Here, she echoes the sentiments of ‘Milestones’ from 2024's REBEL, where she stresses that she's immensely thankful for the success she has and continues to experience, but nonetheless admits that there are times she feels exhausted and lost.
This level of candour and honesty only makes the ultimate conclusion Wilson reaches - that Jesus is the one that will carry her through this emotional valley - even more powerful.
As the excitement grew ahead of its release, Wilson took to socials to underline how ‘Carry Me’ is particularly meaningful for her, “Recording “Carry Me” was special. This is one of the most personal songs I’ve written and I can’t wait for you to hear more”.
When announcing the track's release date, Wilson again emphasised how much she was looking forward to sharing it with fans before her record, “I can't believe it’s October and my new album is almost here!! I’ve loved seeing your reaction to “Carry Me” and I’m excited to share that I've decided to release it early this Friday!”
“I went to bed 15
I woke up 23
And now it all just feels like
Some kind of crazy tragic dream
Truth is I’m way too young
To feel as old as I do
It ain’t easy being strong
When they’re all counting on you
-
So girl pull yourself together
Don’t you dare lose your composure
So much for closure
-
Where is that little girl?
That one I used to be
I can’t remember the last time
That I felt young and free
How much can one heart take
When it’s taking on everything
I carry the weight of the world
Can someone carry me?
-
Everyone else is dealing
But I’ve got no time for healing
So I play the part, bottle up
Every single thing I’m feeling
-
So girl pull yourself together
Don’t you dare lose your composure
Feels like it’s all on my shoulders
Where is that little girl?
That one I used to be
I can’t remember the last time
That I felt young and free
How much can one heart take
When it’s taking on everything
I carry the weight of the world
Can someone carry me?
Oh, can someone carry me?
-
I miss that little girl
The one I used to be
Maybe that little girl
Is still somewhere inside of me
-
How much can one heart take
When it’s taking on everything
I carry the weight of the world
Can someone carry me?
Jesus, can you carry me?
I need You to carry me”
