“This is a Secret...”: Brandon Lake Confirms He's Dropping a New Version of ‘When I Cowboy Prays’ with Cody Johnson

The news we've been waiting for.

During his recent King of Hearts tour-stop, Brandon Lake has confirmed his soulful new single, ‘When a Cowboy Prays’, will be getting a star-studded re-release very soon.

When we first heard ‘When a Cowboy Prays’, we immediately thought Cody Johnson would sound fantastic on this track - and it turns out a lot of other fans thought the same. Thankfully, Lake has listened to these calls, with the Contemporary Christian Music hitmaker confirming he's dropping a new version with CoJo.

It's fantastic news, and we're wondering if this was always the plan, or whether this is simply a response to the overwhelming amount of clamouring from fans for Johnson to hop on the track. Either way, we're excited this duet will be out in the world.

In one clip, for instance, Lake confides, “The cool part about this song is...and I'm not telling anybody except for those who've showed up to my tour, so you can't post about it because it's a secret...but this song I'm about to sing I just recorded with Cody Johnson, and we're gonna come out with this...” before joking about fans’ responses, “I heard all of your comments. I wrote this song and you're like, ‘This sounds like CoJo! You gotta get CoJo!’ I was like, ‘Honey, already on it...!’”

Lake has been venturing further and further into the country music sphere in recent months, with the ‘That's Who I Praise’ crooner teaming up with Gabby Barrett for ‘As For Me & My Home’ back in June, as well as performing ‘Hard Fought Hallelujah’ alongside his close friend Jelly Roll during Nashville's CMA Fest 2025.

There's no release date yet, but Lake has been teasing fans on recent tour-stops by sharing with them the “secret” news that he's recorded a duet version with Johnson. With the solo version of ‘When a Cowboy Prays’ still building momentum on streaming platforms - sitting at almost 1.5 million streams on Spotify alone, after dropping in late September - we reckon Lake is plotting a similar release strategy to ‘Hard Fought Hallelujah’, which was re-recorded with Jelly in February.

That track, of course, then exploded into a monster hit, going viral across TikTok and earning Lake and Jelly the prestigious 2025 DOVE Award for Song of the Year. For that rollout, Lake dropped the solo version a few months ahead of the duet, so we're wondering if the ‘Gratitude’ singer-songwriter is opting for a similar tactic here.

With Johnson sharing a photo from the studio in late September and teasing that he's been “working on something for y'all”, perhaps this was a snap of him laying down his vocals for ‘When a Cowboy Prays’. Hopefully, this could mean we'll be getting the eagerly anticipated collaboration in the coming weeks - fingers crossed...
