Colter Wall has just sent another thinly veiled barb in the direction of Nashville's country scene, with the Saskatchewan native announcing his new single through a light-hearted video of a makeshift ‘billboard’ being unveiled on his Canada ranch.
The camera begins on a flimsy, wooden sign emblazoned with, ‘Music Row - 1,800 Miles’, before panning out to show wide-open fields. In the background, a clip of Colter's unreleased track, seemingly titled ‘1,800 Miles From Music Row’, can be heard.
The caption playfully reads, “Management suggested getting a billboard to promote the upcoming single. A cheaper option was selected”. The ‘Sleeping on the Blacktop’ singer-songwriter is seemingly taunting Nashville's country music ‘machine’.
It's become prevalent for labels and management in Nashville to buy billboards in town to promote new singles, particularly for up-and-coming artists, as a sign of status. Colter appears to be poking fun at this, with the alt-country crooner continuing to double-down on his outspoken comments criticising the Music City landscape.
The new single, which does not yet have a release date, is assumed to be ‘1,800 Miles From Music Row’, which Colter Wall started teasing towards the end of August.
Back in December, Colter Wall criticised Nashville awards shows, donning them, “probably the biggest waste of anybody's time”, and the ‘Cowpoke’ hitmaker has always steered clear of the mainstream country world. Colter famous prefers to write his music on his ranch, rather than travelling to Nashville to collaborate.
Either way, it's exciting to learn that new music is on the way from Colter, with this next collection of songs set to be his first release since 2023's lauded record, Little Songs.
