1738, baby.
We all know that 2016 is back in fashion, and ‘Trap Queen’ hitmaker Fetty Wap's release from prison feels like the icing on the cake for this nostalgic trend. Fetty had a purple patch of absolutely iconic rap anthems in the 2010's, ranging from ‘Trap Queen‘ to ‘Again’ to ‘679’ to ‘My Way’, which got a high-profile remix from Drake.
But why is this relevant to the world of country music? Well, Russell Dickerson has been going incredibly viral on TikTok, after his wife - Kailey - posted a video of him delivering a hilariously accurate imitation of Fetty's signature ‘Yaaa, baby’ ad-libs.
The clip is still popping off, and at the time of writing, is sat on a whopping 19.4 million views. Kailey then posted an equally impressive follow-up, with RD serving up some more Fetty-inspired vocals, with nothing more than the forest as his accompaniment.
With Fetty now out of prison, after being charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, the world is waiting with bated breath to see what the New Jersey rapper has planned. Fans have been clamouring for a link-up with RD ever since his initial clip went viral, and now, with a new unreleased teaser posted by Dickerson, it seems we might have the perfect song for Fetty to hop on with a verse.
The ‘Happen To Me’ chart-topper has shared a snippet of a brand new track, titled ‘BOOTS’, which finds Dickerson crooning about a love interest across a sleek, R&B-infused instrumental (“Watchin’ ‘em do-si-do / Straight across the floor / I can't keep my hands to myself watchin’ you dance in those / B-O-O-T-S / Sun-D-R-E-S-S / This ole’ boy all in a mess / I never will forget, she had those lips like a red Corvette / Heart singin’ like June sunset / She got my head spinnin’ like she was spinnin’ all in them / All in them B-O-O-T-S, yeah / All in them B-O-O-T-S, yeah”).
When Dickerson delivers the final “yeah”, there's no question that he sings it in that classic Fetty style. What's more, in the caption, he's teased that, if the post gets enough engagement, Fetty might join in with a verse, “For 100K shares will @fettywap1738 put a verse on this?!?!?!?!?”. Excitingly, Fetty has commented with the ‘looking eyes’ emoji, hinting that a collaboration might well be on the cards.
Given how viral Dickerson's videos have been going, and the fact that Fetty has responded to this post, we're hoping this means the duo are indeed teaming up for ‘B-O-O-T-S’.
Judging by the ‘B-O-O-T-S’ ASCAP entry, it seems the track was written by Dickerson with two of Music City's premier songsmiths, Matt Dragstrem and Dylan Marlowe. It's a country-trap anthem that would certainly lend itself to an electric Fetty verse.
With Dickerson unveiling a new birthday-themed RussellMania show in Nashville on May 8th, featuring a host of special guests, we reckon this would be the ideal place to bring out Fetty and perform the live debut of ‘B-O-O-T-S’. Either way, we can't wait to hear the full version of this new track - 2016 is well and truly back.
