As fans continue to clamour for Post Malone's long-teased new album, The Eternal Buzz, the ‘Chemical’ hitmaker offered an update on the project. In the newly shared picture, Post reveals a few song-titles from the tracklist - and we think we've spotted a clue that Post has another Morgan Wallen collaboration on the record.
In the image, you can see Posty holding up a middle-finger to his haters, with a partially obscured whiteboard behind him featuring some song-names. One of these is ‘Chrome Heartbreaker’, which Post has been teasing extensively across social media.
One of the songs, though, has piqued our interest - ‘Call You Back’. If you search the other track-titles on the whiteboard on the ASCAP repertory - the database for all registered songs, even if they're unreleased - you won't be able to find much.
But when you search for ‘Call You Back’, one of the registered songs that comes up is an unreleased track written by a few of Post's closest country collaborators - and Wallen. ‘Call You Back’ credits Wallen, ERNEST, Ashley Gorley, John Byron and Ryan Vojtesak as writers. Vojtesak is the real name of Charlie Handsome, who was one of the key producers throughout Post's F-1Trillion sessions.
And ERNEST was the lynchpin for so many of the collaborations on that album, so it would make sense that Post would be writing with him again for The Eternal Buzz. Ashley Gorley and John Byron, meanwhile, are two of the most prolific songwriters in Nashville, penning Wallen hits like ‘Last Night’, ‘Thinkin’ Bout Me’ and more.
It's possible, of course, that this ‘Call You Back’ is a different one to the song that's on Post's whiteboard. It's not an uncommon phrase, after all. But you can't help but feel that, given how closely Post works with both ERNEST and Handsome in particular, and his stellar track record of Wallen link-ups, it seems like a very big coincidence if these are two distinct songs, and Wallen isn't part of Posty's ‘Call You Back’.
It's also worth highlighting that, even if they are the same song, it doesn't necessarily mean Wallen will be a vocalist on it - perhaps the Sneedville native is just a writer.
But again, given how momentous both of Post and Wallen's previous collaborations - ‘I Had Some Help’ and ‘I Ain't Comin‘ Back’ - have been, you have to assume that if both artists are involved in some way, they'd surely make it a full-blown duet.
There's another interesting detail about ‘Call You Back’ on Post's The Eternal Buzz whiteboard. Each song on the tracklist is colour-coded, depending on whether it is fully finished and mixed, needs re-writing or is missing Post's finalised vocals.
‘Call You Back’ is written in black, which, based on the colour-coding system, means it's ‘written’ and ‘cut’ - as in, it's finished. But there's also a little blue ‘rewrite’ in brackets next to it. This could either mean it still needs a rewrite, or alternatively, that the final recorded version is a rewritten, updated edition of the original song.
Perhaps this implies that Post has added his own touch to Wallen, ERNEST, Handsome and Byron's version of ‘Call You Back’. This would explain why ‘Call You Back’ is one of the only songs from the whiteboard that shows up on ASCAP. Post and his camp will have likely kept most of the songs on The Eternal Buzz under wraps and held them back from ASCAP until nearer the release date. But perhaps they've withheld the new version of ‘Call You Back’, but because the original song without Post was already registered, this one still appears on ASCAP.
This is all speculation at this point. But with Wallen appearing on the biggest song on F-1Trillion, and with Post returning the favour by joining the ‘Love Somebody’ singer-songwriter on one of the most popular tracks from I'm the Problem, you'd think Wallen is one of the most likely guests to feature on The Eternal Buzz. And based on these potential easter eggs and clues for ‘Call You Back’, we think this could be the name of their next collaboration - and we can't wait to hear it.
