It was by chance that Ella Langley and Jo Dee Messina performed the latter's 1998 hit, 'Lesson In Leavin',' together at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium last November. Well, chance ... and a viral TikTok cover ... and a seamstress to the stars.
During a one-on-one conversation between the two stars at CRS 2026, the pair revealed how their surprise duet, that wowed fans at the legendary country venue this past Fall, actually came together.
It all began when Langley posted a reel to her social media. In the video, she can be seen in her kitchen, preparing a meal for the oven. As she seasons the dish, she's casually singing Messina's well-loved 'Lesson In Leavin'' to pass the mundane task. Little did the two artists know, this clip would blow up, fans showing plenty of love to the a cappella reimagining.
As Langley tells it: "The TikTok was going around. People were loving that sound, and then Jo Dee had reached out to me. Can you imagine being me and that comes across my phone as a text message? Like, what is life? What is life? And so we made friends."
At that time, Langley was planning out what would be a two-night showcase at the Ryman. She explains that she was toying with the idea of bringing fellow artists out to share that iconic stage with her.
"I wanted to ask Jo Dee to do 'Lesson In Leavin','" the star continued. "I kept meaning to, and then, I was like, 'I don't know, is it weird to ask?' I was just overthinking it too much."
It wasn't until fate and their shared seamstress intervened.
"My seamstress went from my house to your house," Langley detailed, turning to Messina to recount the circumstances, "and told you what she was fitting me for."
Messina reached out to the artist almost immediately, texting her words of encouragement and excitement around the Ryman opportunity. It was with this that Langley found the opening – and the courage – to request her appearance onstage.
"You texted me the sweetest text message about like, 'I'm so proud of you.' You just said the nicest things and were so encouraging. And then I was like, 'Well, are you going to be here? Because I was thinking, it's be really cool if...'"
With the briefest opening in Messina's touring schedule, the two made it happen on night one of her two-night event, revving up the audience with a powerhouse display of 'Lesson In Leavin'.'
Where the song started a friendship, the performance appears to have made companions for life.
