While chatting to Willie Geist for TODAY, Riley Green opens up about his stellar partnership with Ella Langley, with Green reflecting on why he thinks fans “latched onto” the duo.
Green begins by stressing that it's impossible to force the kind of on-stage and in-studio chemistry he and Langley have, “You can't fabricate something like that”, before confessing the immense success of ‘you look like you love me’ and ‘Don't Mind If I Do’ shocked him, “The moments that those songs had was a surprise to me”.
Langley and Green's unashamedly traditional-leaning ‘you look like you love me’ picked up an array of CMA Awards in 2025, including Song of the Year, while the pared-down ‘Don't Mind If I Do‘ earned the ACM for Musical Event of the Year earlier in 2026.
Green meditates on the way in which fans of both artists became invested in the duo, both professionally and personally, as rumours swirled around a potential relationship.
Green shares how he thinks their shared home-state added to the appeal, “It was something to where fans really latched onto us. The songs, it helped that we had two big hit songs together, but really, they just, they love the story of us being from Alabama”.
The ‘Worst Way’ hitmaker goes on to explain how the fact that Green and Langley were touring together extensively while the two tracks were blowing up also elevated the hype around them, “Being on tour together, we're seen together everywhere on the road for the better part of two years, and I think that had a lot to do with it”.
Naturally, as Green has admitted in past interviews, the fact that fans were speculating about a possible romance between him and Langley only aided both songs’ popularity.
Regardless of whether there was ever any credence behind it, as listeners, we always want to believe there's some truth behind a love-story, especially one as captivating as that of both ‘you look like you love me’ and ‘Don't Mind If I Do’, so the conjecture circling Green and Langley only enhanced the charm of their duets. Although they're no longer on the road together and don't perform these songs as often as they used to, we hope we get to see them join forces again in the near future.
