During a recent appearance on Katie & Company, Gavin Adcock spoke to host Katie Neal about how he beat Morgan Wallen to a song they had both put on hold.
Adcock has recorded a few songs that Wallen has passed on, but this particular track was effectively in joint custody - something that isn't supposed to happen
Usually, when an artist puts a song on hold, it becomes unavailable to other artists until they record it or release the hold. However, Wallen and Adcock managed to reserve a track at the same time, which makes things a little more interesting.
“It’s a song called ‘Dreamer’ and somehow we both put it on hold at the same time,” Adcock told Neal, “I cut it and he hadn’t cut it yet”.
Wallen and Adcock have a close relationship, with the ‘The Day I Hang It Up’ singer spending the last two summers opening for Wallen on tour. Wallen also signed Adcock to his management company, Sticks Management, in 2025, adding another layer to their mentor-mentee relationship.
Being at the same management agency came in handy, with Adcock then able to get a message to Wallen pretty easily.
“I’m over at Sticks Management where he’s at with Austin Neal and my manager Saxon [Curry],” Adcock continued, “I just told Saxon I was like ‘hit Austin up and tell him I cut this song see what Morgan says’ and I was like, ‘God, I hope he doesn’t say he’s gonna take it’… and he was like, ‘yeah, you can have it’.”
Written by John Pierce, Josh Miller and Will Bundy, ‘Dreamer’ features on Adcock’s latest album, The Day I Hang It Up. It sounds right at home on the record, but there's also a certain Morgan Wallen quality to the track, and we can easily imagine the Sneedville native singing it, too.
Adcock’s latest album, The Day I Hang It Up, is out now, with tickets for his 2027 tour also on sale.
