Ingrid Andress has shared a demo of her new song, ‘Blue Genes’, after joking that she predicted the furore surrounding Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle advertising campaign.
The track finds the ‘More Hearts Than Mine’ hitmaker delivering a play on the phrase ‘Blue Jeans’, as she laments how she has ‘the blues’ in her DNA - or, in other words, she has ‘Blue Genes’ (“That's just the way that I'm wired / Born to be broken and tired”).
In the caption, Andress nods to the media storm currently engulfing actor Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle, as she dryly shares, “not sure what kinda jeans Ms. Sweeney has but I’ve got blue genes”. Sweeney was recently chosen as the face of a controversial new campaign for American Eagle jeans, which revolves around the idea that she has “great genes”. It's a pun on “great jeans”, but one that has left many feeling uncomfortable and outraged due to the provocative implication that a white, blue-eyed and blonde-haired person has “great genes”.
Andress’ song, though, is completely unrelated, and the Michigan native makes it clear she penned ‘Blue Genes’ long before the release of American Eagle's new advertising campaign.
In a video shared over the weekend, Andress jokes that she has seemingly predicted two viral moments through her songwriting, after also penning a track called ‘Coldplay’. Last month, of course, the clip of Andy Byron, the (now ex) CEO of Astronomer, and Kristin Cabot, the company's Chief People Officer, on the Coldplay kiss-cam was all anyone was talking about - and now, it's the American Eagle ad.
Andress is no stranger to being at the heart of a social media whirlwind, with the ‘Lady Like’ crooner receiving backlash after her inebriated performance of the national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby last summer. She subsequently revealed she had checked herself into rehab, and recently started her long-awaited comeback, releasing two stellar singles, ‘Footprints’ and ‘Catch 22’, this year.
Putting the apt timing of ‘Blue Genes’ to one side, it's a beautifully composed track that highlights Andress’ ability to viscerally express her darkest thoughts and emotions, while cushioning her admissions in vibrant, dreamlike and piano-driven instrumentals.
Judging by her recent post, it looks like Andress has a host of unreleased tracks up her sleeve - and we're hoping ‘Blue Genes’ will be dropping in the coming weeks.
