We’re starting to think that Jo Dee Messina and Ella Langley might be the newest pair of country music besties.
On an appearance on the God’s Country Podcast, uploaded on July 7th, 90’s country legend Jo Dee Messina joined podcasters and songwriters, The Brothers Hunt, for an interesting conversation about fame, motherhood, her reliance on her faith and some old, unheard stories. During the conversation though, the discussion turned to a fellow female country musician and Messina took a minute to talk about her favourite song from Ella Langley’s latest studio album, Dandelion.
Messina explained that ‘Loving Life Again’ quickly became her top track from the album before it was even released into the world - “When I first heard this song before the album was released, and she sent it to me, and I was like, ‘I heard a clip of this. I got to have it.’”. Langley, gracious as ever, sent the song her way and Messina fell in love with the track.
On the podcast, Messina talks about how much she loves the simplicity of the song and the importance of its message, linking it to her own relationship with creativity and faith. This was before she launched into her own impromptu acoustic cover of ‘Loving Life Again’s catchy chorus. Messina’s pure, 90’s country voice brought the song to life in the God’s Country studio.
This was by no means the first time the 90’s legend and current country trailblazer have crossed paths. At the end of 2024, Langley shared a cover of Messina’s hit song ‘Lesson in Leavin’, recorded while the ‘Choosin Texas’ singer cooked up a storm for dinner. When Messina commented “Hope we get to work together someday!”, it seems a friendship was born.
Almost a year later, Langley brought out her 90’s idol at the legendary Ryman Auditorium where they performed ‘Lesson in Leavin’ together. The follow up to that? Messina shared a cover of Langley’s monumental ‘Choosin’ Texas’ to her social media.
It seems as if this friendship is one built on admiration and mutual respect, as the two recognise just how important they both are to the world of female country music. Rounding it off on the podcast, Messina said “I just love the simplicity of it and the life that that simplicity brings,” sometimes, all you need is some good music to help you find some good friends.
