After impressing with a smattering of singles throughout 2024 and 2025, Kashus Culpepper has gifted us his debut album, Act 1 - and it's safe to say it was worth the wait.
The 18-song project finds the Alabama native showcasing his eclectic, variegated palette of musical influences, with Culpepper flitting between traditional country on ‘Broken Wing Bird’ to the bluesy, choir-backed ‘Alabama Beauty Queen’.
Via a heartfelt post, Culpepper underlines how much he has enjoyed crafting this project, “Creating music has been the greatest joy of my life. What a magical thing it is”.
The ‘After Me?’ singer-songwriter expands, “My debut album ACT I serves as a beginning of that journey. I want to thank my label, band, fans, friends and family for helping me bring this album to life! And thank you to every musical idol I’ve ever had”.
Act I is peppered with storytelling intricacy and striking vignettes, but the star of the show is undoubtedly Culpepper's rich, soulful vocals. His charismatic, evocative rasp lights up stand-outs such as ‘Break Me Like’, ‘Mean To Me’ and ‘House On A Hill’.
Aptly, the expansive, captivating project concludes with the sparse, piano-driven ‘Cherry Rose’, penned alongside revered songwriting phenom, Mikky Ekko. It allows the spotlight to fall unwaveringly on Culpepper's vibrant delivery and the intimate instrumental, with this visceral offering continuing to strike a chord with listeners.
Over the course of the past couple of years, since signing with one of Nashville's hottest labels, Big Loud Records, Culpepper has cemented himself as a critical darling among the country industry, while building a loyal, burgeoning fanbase.
With the arrival of Act I, recorded in the iconic Muscle Shoals in Culpepper's home-state of Alabama, the fast-emerging artist delivers on the promise he has shown, consolidating his status as a future star in the blossoming alt-country landscape.
