Kevin Costner's controversial neo-Western movie, Horizon: An American Saga -Chapter 1, has been made available to stream on Amazon Prime Video for the first time.
While the release date for Chapter 2, which has already been filmed, continues to be shrouded in mystery, fans can enjoy Chapter 1 of Costner's dramatic exploration of the Old West. Chapter 2 was initially set to premiere in August 2024, just a couple of months after Chapter 1 arrived, but was then pushed back due to the low ratings and ticket sales of the first instalment. Horizon is meant to be four parts.
Horizon has been surrounded by high-profile clashes and conflict since Day One, with Costner reportedly departing his wildly popular series, Yellowstone, before the final season so that he could finish Chapter 1 and 2. This allegedly caused tension between he and the Yellowstone creators, such as Taylor Sheridan, with Costner maintaining that he did everything he could to move the Horizon schedule around.
It led to Costner's character in Yellowstone, the charismatic patriarch, John Dutton, being killed off in what many fans perceived to be a somewhat underwhelming way in Season 5 Part 2, due to Costner not being around to film any more scenes.
Horizon stars Costner as a formidable cowboy in the pre-Civil War era, and also features Sienna Miller, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower, Abbey Lee, Georgia MacPhail, Sam Worthington and Wase Chief. Much like Yellowstone and its associated prequels, much of Horizon pivots around the relationship between settlers and Native American communities that had been living on the land for thousands of years.
The official synopsis reads, “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won - and lost - through the blood, sweat, and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends, and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America”.
It's the latest in a string of Western-inspired roles for Costner, who, as well as portraying Dutton, has also played Jake in Silverado, John Dunbar in Dances With Wolves, the titular cowboy in the now-iconic Wyatt Earp and many more beloved characters.
