Maya Lane has released her keenly awaited debut album, Start Of Something, with the country-folk prodigy cementing her next-big-thing status with this stellar 13-song collection.
Led by singles like the sparkling, galvanising ‘Sun Comes Out’, Start Of Something captures the bright, sun-drenched spirit that permeates Lane's songwriting. ‘Destiny’ is a gleeful, infectious gem, while ‘Cherry Stains & Dumb Flings’ showcases the UK singer-songwriter's penchant for enchantingly specific storytelling.
Fans are also celebrating the arrival of ‘Guys Like You’, which has been a staple of Lane's live shows in recent years. It finds Lane recounting a man hitting on her in a Nashville bar, but despite the unpleasant nature of the conversation, Lane gives the track a playful tone as she politely underlines, “Guys like you aren't my type”.
As you delve deeper into Start Of Something, Lane highlights her versatility, flitting between bold, pop-driven anthems and pared-down, acoustic and folk-infused meditations.
Taking to socials ahead of the release, Lane underlines how special this project is, “This record has literally felt like my whole life in the making. I’ve dreamed of this moment since I was a little girl and can’t believe tomorrow you get to step into my world”.
Lane goes on, “From writing sessions that felt like therapy, to sleepless nights going over my thoughts, feelings and lyrics, from laughing till I was crying in the studio to literally crying, struggling through working a million side jobs to make this possible”.
It's no secret that life as an independent artist comes with a multitude of challenges, but Lane isn't allowing that to slow her down, “I’ve put my absolute all into this project. So here I am as an independent artist planting my flag in the ground”.
There's a wonderfully ethereal, dream-like quality to many of the songs on Start Of Something, epitomised by ‘Ruin My Life’, one of the most moving tracks on the project. Lane's sinuous vocals are cushioned by the hazy, atmospheric composition, immersing the listener in her evocative tale as the intensity builds.
With Lane having secured a host of coveted support slots over the years for artists like Margo Price and Brandy Clark, as well as performing at Noah Kahan's BST Hyde Park show, this album ensures the momentum remains high behind the ‘Good Company’ singer-songwriter. Given how captivating and refreshingly eclectic this project is, it's safe to say fans are excited to see what's next, as Lane solidifies her place at the forefront of the next wave of country-folk artists.
