In a new interview, Riley Green is reflecting on his time on the hit Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, with the ‘Worst Way’ hitmaker paying homage to his co-star and friend, Luke Grimes.
Green has spoken in the past about how Grimes proposed the Alabama native as a potential guest star in Marshals after Green had expressed an interest in doing some acting. Then, Green did some auditions, and landed the role, appearing as Garrett - or Double-G, as his US Navy Seals warmly called him - in Season 2.
During a conversation with People as part of his People's Sexiest Man Alive interview, Green reflects on dabbling in acting and admits he was a little apprehensive at first, “That I could even remotely act was news to me. And going into something like that, truly not knowing if you can do it is a pretty scary thing”.
He goes on to underline that Grimes helped to reassure him, “But Luke Grimes is a super talented, great dude and I got to know him and that’s kind of how I got into that world. I was really fortunate. He was in a lot of the scenes with me and having somebody you’ve got a rapport with in your first acting scenes, being out of your comfort zone, helped so much. It was just exciting to try something new”.
Green and Grimes have become close friends over the past year or so, with the subject of Green doing some acting coming up during a co-write in Nashville. We haven't heard the fruits of this session yet, but we're hoping it'll feature on Grimes’ next project.
Grimes has spoken about his appreciation for Green in the past, sharing via an interview with SiriusXM, “Riley and I were doing a write together, and he was talking about wanting to act. And this was right when Marshals was sort of coming together”.
The American Sniper star continued, “And I thought, ‘Man, that would be kind of cool if he was, like, in my show’. You know, I knew what it was gonna be about, I knew we were gonna do that Navy SEAL stuff, and I was like, he could be like an old team buddy or something. He's got that look to him. He could be a team guy. And I knew I wasn't doing myself any favours - who wants to stand next to him on-screen? You know what I mean? He's 6 foot 4 and pretty darn handsome”.
Grimes then joked about the fact that CBS asked Green to do an audition, “hey made him audition. And I was like, you're gonna make Riley Green audition for this? Like, we wrote him a part, like, give it to him. [CBS were like], No, we want to make sure he can act a little bit, and I was like, okay. So he flew out to Utah and I auditioned with him. We read together...I just thought it was the funniest thing ever that he had to audition for something”. Green has underlined previously that he's grateful he had to audition, because it made him feel like he'd earned the part.
Green undoubtedly impressed as Garrett, especially considering it was his first major acting role. And judging by how fondly the ‘I Wish Grandpas Never Died’ singer-songwriter talks about the experience, we suspect he'll return to the screen before too long.
With a high-profile judging position on The Voice and a new album out in the world, it's safe to say it's been an eventful 2026 so far for the ‘Different ‘Round Here’ chart-topper, with Green continuing to broaden his horizons beyond the confines of country music.
