Is Sabrina Carpenter teasing a full-blown pivot towards country, or just showing love to a genre that has influenced her sound? Either way, as country music fans, we're not complaining about having the pop trailblazer dipping her toes into the genre.
This past weekend, the ‘Manchild’ hitmaker joined forces with country icons, The Chicks, to perform the latter's much-loved anthem, ‘Wide Open Spaces’. The chart-topping trio stayed on-stage for a joyful rendition of Sabrina's smash hit, ’Please Please Please’, which she re-released in February with the Queen of Country, Dolly Parton.
The Chicks’ emergence was a fantastic surprise amid Sabrina's earworm-filled setlist, which featured floor-fillers such as ‘Espresso’, ‘Juno’, ‘Tears’, ‘Taste’ and many more.
During the previous weekend of Austin City Limits Music Festival in Texas, Sabrina brought out country legend, Shania Twain, for ‘That Don't Impress Me Much’. It marked the second time the duo have teamed up, following their playful performance on ‘Santa Baby’ for Sabrina's 2024 Nonsense Netflix Christmas Special.
Over the course of the past couple of years, the ‘Espresso’ singer-songwriter has continually paid homage to country music. Just this month, for instance, Sabrina made her coveted Grand Ole Opry debut, with the Pennsylvania native performing ‘Please Please Please, ‘Go Go Juice’, ‘Manchild’ and the country-infused ’Slim Pickins’.
With Sabrina having just released her celebrated new album, Man's Best Friend, this summer, we're hoping we might get an extended deluxe version soon - much like we did with Short n’ Sweet - featuring some more blockbuster country collaborations.
Sabrina's sinuous, enchanting vocals lend themselves perfectly to the genre, with tracks such as ’Slim Pickins’ and her recent on-stage link-ups showcasing just how much she appreciates country music. Who knows, maybe one day the pop titan will join the likes of Beyoncé and Post Malone and drop an entire country record...
