“The First Song Anyone Has Written For Me”: Kenny Chesney Joins Megan Moroney on New Collaboration, ‘You Had To Be There’

After seemingly teasing a new collaboration earlier in April, Megan Moroney and Kenny Chesney have revealed they'll be dropping their first song together, ‘You Had To Be There’.

In a new social media post featuring a flurry of heartwarming photos of the duo as well as the single artwork, Megan Moroney has shared, “7 years later got a different point of view…”...YOU HAD TO BE THERE FT. KENNY CHESNEY OUT MAY 9TH”.

In the comments section, Kenny Chesney has endearingly responded, “As far as I know this is the first song anyone has written for me . Thank you Megan. I love ya”.

Earlier in April, Megan Moroney shared an Instagram carousel from St. John - a place that has inspired much of Kenny Chesney's sun-soaked, tropically-themed discography - which included a clip of Moroney and Chesney singing along to an unreleased song.

It now appears that track was ‘You Had To Be There’. Judging by the fact that Moroney has posted an image of her purchasing tickets to see Chesney back in 2018 in Atlanta, this exciting collaboration seems to be an homage to the ‘I Go Back’ hitmaker.

With Megan Moroney and Kenny Chesney spending much of 2024 out on the road together on the Sun Goes Down Tour, and sharing a number of sweet messages of praise and encouragement to one another in subsequent months, the duo's friendship has blossomed over the past year. Just last week, for instance, Moroney jokingly introduced Chesney to TikTok. Fans have therefore been clamouring for a collaboration for some time - and thankfully, on May 9th we're getting our wish.
