Wynonna Judd has called out Kacey Musgraves on voicing her political views in a recent interview with Outkick Podcast, saying that Dolly Parton “wouldn’t do that”.

“I can’t speak for other people, all I can say is this,” Judd told host Tomi Lahren, “when I go on stage I am keenly aware that people spend their money on the ticket.”

Judd’s response comes after being prompted by Lahren while they discussed Musgraves' latest statement of “f*ck Christopher Columbus” at one of her shows.

“I never hear from my fans, “hey would you come out and sing 'Grandpa' and tell me what your political view is?” Judd continued. “I’ve never had that. In my entire career have I ever had a fan say ‘we wanna know your position on this or this’.”

Musgraves, known for her candid style and tenacity in the face of adversity, is not one for a meek and mild stage presence. Arguably, fans of Musgraves would expect a little spice from the ‘Dry Spell’ singer at a show. She has been vocal about her opinions on gun laws, family separation around immigration and presidential elections. A political stance from Kacey Musgraves is nothing new.

Musgraves' comment came from her performance on October 12th 2026 which was celebrated as Columbus Day across the USA. This national holiday is also shared with Indigenous People's Day, which Musgraves chose to celebrate with her fans. The same fans that encouraged and cheered her statements at that show.

Judd, however, feels differently about those opinions and their place on a stage.

“My job is to be an entertaining person,” she shared with Lahren, “my job is to show my gift and let it trickle into the audience and for them to connect with me and go home feeling better than they did when they go there. That’s my job. My job isn’t to go on there and do all that.”

“So…again, what would Dolly do? She wouldn’t do that. And that’s why I love her so much because she loved everybody, she really did, I know that for a fact. And everybody loved her.”

The last point comes as a thud following Musgraves’ beautiful tribute to the late icon, Dolly Parton, at the 2026 VMAs. And maybe Dolly wouldn’t share her political views as boldly as Musgraves, but that has to be partly attributed to a generational quietness. However, you can guarantee that if Dolly felt strongly about something, she’d make it known.

Which begs the question, should artists use their platform to shout about what they believe in? Or should they use their platform purely for their art? The boundaries get messy, particularly in country music, where beliefs tend to form a large part of the inspiration behind songs. Maybe the craft lies somewhere in meeting the expectations of your fans.

If Wynonna Judd started spouting political passions at one of her shows, it would be a slight jump scare for fans who absolutely have not paid money to hear that, but at a Musgraves show? That’s pretty much par for the course. And maybe that’s OK.
