Shortly after the arrival of Maddox Batson's debut project, First Dance, the teen prodigy announced he'd be gifting fans an additional three tracks as part of his After Party deluxe.
One of the undoubted stand-outs from the expanded version of First Dance is ‘I Need a Truck’, which finds the ‘I Don't Like You Anymore’ singer-songwriter serving up a rose-tinted ode to young love through an age-old country trope - the 4x4.
Co-written with a trio of Nashville's leading songsmiths, Ashley Gorley, Hunter Phelps and David Garcia, ‘I Need a Truck’ is an earworm that cements Batson's next-big-thing status.
Maddox Batson's smooth vocals glide across a bright, guitar-driven instrumental, with the composition reflecting the endearing warmth and innocence of the narrative. The hook sees the introduction of an energising drum pattern, helping to elevate this into the perfect summer, roll-down-your-windows anthem.
“All my life I’ve been counting down to the day
Papa gives me the keys
So I can take it wide open down an old two lane
Put my hand in the breeze
Couldn’t wait to burn some gas
Put some stickers on the glass
Aw but baby since I met you I ain’t worried bout all that”
Maddox Batson begins by reflecting on how he's always wanted a truck from his father, but initially, it was just because he was keen to customise his own Ford or Chevy. However, ever since he met the girl he's singing about, his perspective has shifted.
“Yeah all I used to want was some country on the dash
Little chrome up on the front, couple buddies in the back
Now all I wanna do is pull it in to pick you up
Watch you light up when you see it
Baby, you’re the reason I need a truck
Yeah, I need a truck”
Batson admits that he simply wanted to play some good ol’ country music through the dashboard speakers with his friends, but now, he only wants to use the truck to pick up his girlfriend. He still yearns for a truck, but his motive has sweetly changed.
“I can see me right now helping you climb in
Rolling your window down
With your pretty brown hair blowing round in the wind
Saying take me on out to
Where we can see the stars
Maybe get out my guitar
Park on one of them hills that you can’t get in a car”
Batson paints an idyllic, bucolic image of parking up in the sticks and playing some songs for his girlfriend on his acoustic guitar, with the imagery now revolving around his new love interest, rather than the truck, as it did in the opening verse.
“I’d save up all my money, do whatever it takes
If I can see that let’s go look on your face
Could be a Ford or a Chevy baby I don’t care
Long as I can look over and see you sitting right there”
In the outro, Maddox Batson emphasises that he's willing to do anything and everything in order to secure this truck, such is his longing to be able to drive around with his girlfriend.
