The Background:

With an album 37 songs - yes, 37 songs - long, it’s inevitable that some of them end up flying under the radar. ‘Missing’ is one of the many hidden gems on Morgan Wallen’s 2025 behemoth, I’m the Problem, with the track finding the Sneedville titan delivering a classic heartbreak anthem as he offers up a witty play on the title.

‘Missing’ arrived in tandem with I’m the Problem on May 16th, 2025, with the uptempo yet bittersweet earworm embodying the forlorn narrative that permeates much of the record, while the sound leans more towards his One Thing At A Time era.

The Sound:

Although Morgan Wallen explores a sparser, more bare-bones production style for the majority of I’m the Problem, ‘Missing’ finds him teaming up with Joey Moi for a style that feels reminiscent of One Thing At A Time. Moi arranges the energising drums and cushioning guitars around Wallen’s layered, commanding vocals, giving ‘Missing’ a fuller sound compared to the likes of ‘I’m a Little Crazy’ and ‘Smile’.

The Meaning:

“You know where my house is

You know where my bar is

You know where that field I park to drink and watch the stars is

You know where my Mom lives

That no trespass pond is

You know where to find me but the problem is”

As is the case for much of I’m the Problem, on ‘Missing’, Morgan Wallen addresses an old flame and conveys his lingering despair at their absence. He sets up the premise by outlining how his ex-lover knows him well enough to know where all his go-to spots are, such as his home, his favourite bar and his mom’s house.

“Anywhere you find me, yeah I’ll be missing

The part of my heart that keeps me from runnin’ away

Anywhere you find me, yeah I’ll be wishin’

That I had the thing that seems to make most people stay

Maybe I’m missing the point, maybe I’m missing a piece

Maybe I’m missing the girl I actually want missing me

Kinda like the Jack in this glass I’m sippin’

Anywhere you find me, yeah I’ll be missing”

However, as we find out in the hook, regardless of where she thinks she’ll find our protagonist, he’ll always be “missing” - but not in the sense of being lost, rather, he’ll be “missing” her love and a piece of his heart. It’s a sweet notion, with Morgan Wallen and his stellar co-writing team again showcasing their penchant for wordplay.

“Girls say they like it

That I’m hard to read

‘Til I say goodbye and

They all watch me leave

I make up a reason

Their makeup starts runnin’

I don’t know what it is but I’m sure missing something ‘cause”

Here, we get a similar sense of frustration to that of ‘Just in Case’, where Morgan Wallen carries out some introspection and wonders why, whenever he starts to feel himself falling in love, he ‘makes up a reason’ and walks out. He nods to the title of the song and admits that he must be “missing something” - i.e. his ex.

“Like some ghost in a bar

They all know me by name

No one’s home in my heart

Guess I’m here but I ain’t”

During the outro, we get the heartbreaking line “No one’s home in my heart / Guess I’m here but I ain’t”, as Morgan Wallen underlines that he can’t focus on what’s in front of him, before he can only notice what’s “missing”. He viscerally depicts the sense of emptiness he feels deep within his soul due to his heartbreak.

What has Morgan Wallen said about 'Missing'?

As is often the case of late, the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter has so far remained tight-lipped on how ‘Missing’ came about. However, when revealing the release date for I'm the Problem, Morgan Wallen provided fans with an insight into the theme of introspection that courses through the project as a whole.

“I have been a problem, for sure, and I've got no problem admitting that. But there are other sides to me as well," he explained. "I've spent the last 11 months really trying to figure out, 'Do I still want to be the problem? Is it time to move past that phase in my life? I think it probably is, and this might be the last time I get a chance to honestly say it.”
