Women of Country Music

More often than not, the history of country music has been her story. Women have been given the space in country music to tackle subjects like the workplace, motherhood, marriage and divorce, adulthood and ageing that they often aren’t given elsewhere.

Whether it’s Mary Chapin Carpenter’s ‘He Thinks He’ll Keep Her, Kitty Wells’ ‘It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels’ or Martina McBride’s ‘Independence Day,’ country songs have always explicitly addressed an adult female experience that most other musical genres don’t.
