  • Song If I Didn't Know You
  • Lyrics
You caught me at a crossroads, you caught me in the nick of time
On the ledge with one foot hanging, just waiting for a sign
I was down and out, running with the wrong crowd
I was walking through every wrong door
I can't imagine all the trouble I’d be if you never made me yours

The Background:

After largely taking 2025 away from making new music, aside from their standout single 'People Hatin',' The Red Clay Strays have returned with their first taste of new music and what we can only hope is the beginning of a new album cycle from the celebrated country quintet.

The reigning CMA Group of the Year released their first tune of 2026, 'If I Didn't Know You,' on February 12.

The emotive love song comes just days before Valentine's Day, and its cinematic music video tells its own story with acting contributions coming from comedian Matt Rife and fitness influencer Mariah Morse.

The Sound:

Written by Natalie Hemby and the band's own Drew Nix, 'If I Didn't Know You' takes on Red Clay's traditional southern rock sound.

As ever helmed by their trusty producer, Dave Cobb, the tune starts off with a full-bodied piano as Brandon Coleman's earnest vocal performance takes center stage.

The full band comes in after the first chorus, bringing together an evocative slow, yet moving number from the Alabama five-piece.

The Meaning:

"You caught me at a crossroads, you caught me in the nick of time
On the ledge with one foot hanging, just waiting for a sign
I was down and out, running with the wrong crowd
I was walking through every wrong door
I can't imagine all the trouble I’d be if you never made me yours"

Taken from the perspective of the male protagonist, the song addresses the other person in the relationship, explaining that their timing was nothing short of impeccable. Just when the narrator thought they were at the end of their rope or their own version of rock bottom, their love interest swooped in and changed everything.

When they try to consider where they might have ended up if things had played out differently, the narrator is sure that there would have been plenty of trouble down that path.

"If I didn't know you, I wouldn't know how to love
I wouldn’t know what it feels like to be someone's only one
If I never saw your eyes, it's like I'd never see the sun
What would I do if I didn't know you?"

The narrator credits their partner with showing them what true love looks like and feels like, teaching them how to love in return.

Likening them to the bright hopefulness of seeing the sun after and extended period of cloudy weather, the narrator leaves the rhetorical question of who they would be today if not for their partner.

"Some people never make it, trying to make it on their own
Another man's just an island until a good woman calls him home
Well, you found me, lost, I see, tossed and turned around
Held on through the ebb and flow, yeah, you ain't putting me down"

You caught me at a crossroads, you caught me in the nick of time
On the ledge with one foot hanging, just waiting for a sign
I was down and out, running with the wrong crowd
I was walking through every wrong door
I can't imagine all the trouble I’d be if you never made me yours

If I didn't know you, I wouldn't know how to love
I wouldn’t know what it feels like to be someone's only one
If I never saw your eyes, it's like I'd never see the sun
What would I do if I didn't know you?

Some people never make it, trying to make it on their own
Another man's just an island until a good woman calls him home
Well, you found me, lost, I see, tossed and turned around
Held on through the ebb and flow, yeah, you ain't putting me down

And if I didn't know you, I wouldn’t know how to love
I wouldn’t know what it feels like to be someone's only one
And if I never saw your eyes, it’s like I'd never see the sun
What would I do if I didn't know you?

I can't see behind of my road
I can’t change my yesterdays
Well, sometimes I just wonder
Who I'd be today?

If I didn't know you, I wouldn't know how to love
I wouldn't know what it feels like to be someone's only one
And if I never saw your eyes, it's like I'd never see the sun
What would I do if I didn't know you?
Oh, what would I do if I didn't know you?

Mm-mmm
