The Background:

On Luke Combs’ sixth studio album, The Way I Am, the North Carolina native is showcasing every aspect of his personality, whether he's reminding listeners he can still get the party going on ‘My Kinda Saturday Night’, singing about how he relishes fatherhood on ‘The Me Part Of You’ or celebrating the little things on ’Days Like These’.

On ’Rethink Some Things’, though, he's getting into his groove as a more sensual, romantic protagonist, a persona he also embodies on ‘Soon As I Get Home’ and ‘Be By You’.

‘Rethink Some Things’, which pivots around a killer hook and an infectious, undulating instrumental, is already establishing itself as an early fan-favourite from The Way I Am.

The Sound:

Combs is showing off his thematic versatility on ‘Rethink Some Things’, stepping back into the shoes of the impassioned, protagonist from ‘The Kind Of Love We Make’.

The mood is steamy and sensual, and the backing mirrors this, with Combs’ charismatic drawl gliding seamlessly across a smooth, soulful and slightly funky instrumental. His vocals are commanding as always, with the ‘Beer Never Broke My Heart’ singer-songwriter upping the intensity as he launches into the sleek chorus.

The Meaning:

‘Rethink Some Things’ is a classic will-they-won't-they narrative, with the protagonist beginning by underlining to his lover that he knows they shouldn't get together and that they aren't right for one another. However, it's clear from the get-go that, despite his protestations, our narrator ultimately can't help but fall back into his flame's arms. As the title hints, he has supposedly settled on a decision regarding their relationship, but the carnal connection they share is too strong to deny.

Combs croons, “You’re the kind of woman / Make a man rethink some things / Kind that makes a made up mind start questioning”, before describing the woman as the “fuse” to his “flame”, stressing that he has a burning desire to rekindle their romance.

“Hold up, that good God almighty
10 of a body’s got me all tore up
I know before I said no more
But no more’s not enough

-

It’s tough
‘Cause that game that you’re playin’s ruthless
And I’m fine every time losin’
‘Cause truth is

-

You’re the kind of woman
Make a man rethink some things
Kind that makes a made up mind start questioning
Everything you wanted
Girl you’re gonna make it hard to leave
You’re the kind of woman
Make a man rethink some things

-

I thought for sure I was through
But one look from you and we ain’t through at all
I try to leave and you get to weaving
Make my run away wanna stay
All wrapped up in your cobwebs
You play your game with my heart
It’s exhausting

-

‘Cause you’re the kinda woman make a man rethink some things
Kind that makes a made-up mind start questioning
Everything he wanted
Girl, you’re gonna make it hard to leave
You’re the kinda woman make a man rethink some things

-

There ain’t much that I can do
When you’re the flame and I’m the fuse
I gave up not giving in to you

-

‘Cause you’re the kinda woman make a man rethink some things
Kind that makes a made-up mind start questioning
Everything he wanted
Girl, you’re gonna make it hard to leave
You’re the kinda woman make a man rethink some things

-

You’re the kinda woman make a man rethink some things”
