Everything you need to know about the heartbroken, long-teased song from Luke Combs’ 2026 studio album, ‘The Way I Am’.
One of the many tracks from Luke Combs’ sixth studio album, The Way I Am, that the ’Beer Never Broke My Heart’ hitmaker had teased in the lead-up to the 2026 project's unveiling.
First performed during the North Carolina native's Australia and New Zealand tour at the start of 2025, he then uploaded a full performance video to YouTube. This can go two ways - either it ensures the buzz is at a fever-pitch by the time the song eventually gets released on streaming platforms, or it can mean we get used to hearing the early version of the track, and the official drop loses its shine.
Thankfully, ‘Wish Upon a Whiskey’ falls into the former category, with Combs delivering on the hype. It's a heartbroken, despondent ballad that we can't wait to sing along to at a show.
Similarly to the title-track of the album, ‘Wish Upon a Whiskey’ is a piano-driven ballad that finds Combs showcasing his rich, evocative vocals across a pared-down instrumental. Sometimes, the ‘Fast Car’ crooner struggles to capture the listener's attention for the whole song when the tempo is pulled back this much, but on ‘Wish Upon a Whiskey’, the melody of the hook is so enchanting that he keeps us captivated throughout. There's the faint, yearning cry of steel in the background, giving this the feel of a neo-traditional, George Strait-inspired anthem.
‘Wish Upon a Whiskey’ finds Combs embodying a despairing protagonist who has tried everything he can to get over a particularly devastating break-up. He's done all the things people say you should - such as wishing on a shooting star, but he admits that he's in such a dark place that he doubts the stars would stoop that low.
Similarly, he's even tried praying, but he's convinced his prayers are not successfully making their way to Heaven. As a result, he's decided to do the only thing he knows how, and bury himself in a bottle of Jack Daniel's. The titular phrase is a play on ‘Wish Upon a Star’, with Combs instead choosing to ‘Wish Upon a Whiskey’.
“Jack Daniels, black label
Empty dinning room table
Here we go again
Another last resort, so help me Jesus
The silence, so quiet
It's filling my mind with everything we were that wasn't
Once again, I fall to pieces
-
I gave up on a shooting star
It'd have to fall down way too far
To fix this kinda feeling that I'm feeling
I tried the back pew of that church
Read every chapter, every verse
But all my prayers, they always hit the ceiling
So I do the only thing that don't make mе feel empty
Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey
-
No chancе at redemption
When there’s no one listening
Tryna keep my head above the water
I'm my own worst enemy
Cause I just keep drowning in this Tennessee
-
I gave up on a shooting star
It'd have to fall down way too far
To fix this kinda feeling that I'm feeling
I tried the back pew of that church
Read every chapter, every verse
But all my prayers always hit the ceiling
So I do the only thing that don't make me feel empty
Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey
-
Here comes the burn
I love to hate
It’s all I got
Ever since
-
I gave up on a shooting star
It'd have to fall down way too far
To fix this kinda feeling that I'm feeling
I tried the back pew of that church
Read every chapter, every verse
But all my prayers, they always hit the ceiling
So I do the only thing that don't make me feel empty
Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey”
