Despite clocking in at just 44-seconds, making it by far the shortest song on the album, Morgan Wallen's I'm the Problem ‘Interlude’ has become one of the most talked-about tracks on the record-breaking project since its release back in May 2025.
Barely a week after I'm the Problem dropped, Wallen made a rare appearance on X (formerly Twitter) to teased an extended version of ‘Interlude’, responding to a fan declaring, “I need a full 2 minute song of interlude please”, with the cryptic “Noted”.
Ever since then, the rumour mill has been in overdrive. The trap and R&B-infused sound of ‘Interlude’ has led many fans to speculate that we might be getting a revamped version of the track with a rapper, similarly to how Wallen reimagined another genre-blurring anthem from I'm the Problem, ‘Miami’, with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross.

The most exciting word on the street was that Drake might be hopping on the ‘Interlude’ remix, with the hazy, early-hours-R&B feel of the track lending itself perfectly to the Toronto rap legend's sound. When Drake emerged with Wallen for his Houston Night Two walk-out last year, following their surprise link-up in 2023 for the ‘You Broke My Heart’ music video, the speculation around ‘Interlude’ reached fever pitch. Then, Drake wore a custom Wallen I'm the Problem jersey during his Berlin show in September, adding more fuel to the flames of conjecture.
Charlie Handsome's wife, Marissa Sardar, even reshared a clip of Drake and Wallen walking out in Texas with the caption “we need him on interlude !” Handsome produced ‘Interlude’, so Drake's potential involvement has clearly been discussed.
What's more, we think the unusual track placement of ‘Interlude’ could be a hint as to Drake's impending remix. Wallen has positioned ‘Interlude’ at No. 6 on a 37-song tracklist - a strange choice, given that an interlude is usually somewhere near the middle. But let's not forget that Drake's nickname is ‘the 6 God’, in honour of Toronto often being dubbed ‘the 6’. Could ‘Interlude’ being No. 6 be a clue...?
Now, in the newly released I'm the Problem CD Zine, which features interviews with Wallen, a moving letter from his father and conversations with a range of key collaborators on the project, there has been another development in the ‘Interlude’ mystery.
Blake Pendergrass, who penned an array of stand-outs from I'm the Problem, including ‘Superman’, ‘The Dealer’ ‘Falling Apart’, ‘Missing’, ‘Number 3 and Number 7’, ‘Miami’ and, crucially, ‘Interlude’, has shed some light on how the latter came about. In his interview for the I'm the Problem CD Zine, Pendergrass reveals that ‘Interlude’ was indeed taken from a full-length song, titled ‘Wrong Way’.
Pendergrass explains, “Charlie Handsome, Rocky Block, Morgan, JB, and I all wrote a song that was ‘Wrong Way’. The ‘Interlude’ is just the end of the lines in that song. Charlie, being rooted in the rap world, said, “Nobody in country music has ever slowed down and re-tuned the end of a song into being almost like an outro””.
He expands, “Originally, the front half of that song slammed into that re-tuned outro. As time went on, I think that we all saw that the outro part of the song just had a little more glimmer on it than the song as a whole. I wasn’t there for the final decision-making process of it all, but they turned that outro into ‘Interlude’, which I think was pretty cool. It’s cool because there’s more to it than meets the eye”.
Pendergrass concludes by paying tribute to how he feels ‘Interlude’ enhances the overall composition and structure of Wallen's I'm the Problem, “I feel like interludes on some albums are very unintentionally done, and this one was super intentional”.
It's unquestionably exciting to learn that there is, as many fans suspected, a full song, and that ‘Interlude’ was simply a snippet taken from it. However, before our imagination runs wild, it's worth emphasising that there's no guarantee that this means Wallen and his team have any plans to release the full version, particularly if, as Pendergrass suggests, the songwriters all felt like the rest of the song wasn't as strong as the ‘Interlude’ portion. Nonetheless, we'd love to at least hear the full version of ‘Wrong Way’, particularly if it leans towards the rap-inspired, R&B-laced textures that Wallen deftly weaves into songs like ‘180 (Lifestyle)’ and ’Miami’.
There's also the possibility, of course, that Wallen and his co-writers - and, perhaps, Drake - could riff off the ‘Interlude’ part of ‘Wrong Way’ and craft a whole new track, rather than using the original version of ‘Wrong Way’ for the extended ‘Interlude’.
Either way, if these songwriting maestros Wallen, Pendergrass, Handsome, Rocky Block and John Byron are all involved, we're sure they'll come up with some more magic.
Elsewhere in the CD Zine, Wallen touchingly pays tribute to Pendergrass, “He’s one of those guys that always comes into the room with a concept. He’s actually usually got two or three concepts where he’s already got the first verse to a chorus written”.
Even so, Pendergrass has no doubts about the source of his creativity, “I see songwriting as something God’s just given us. Even the ideas that we come up with in the room, they’re there for a reason, and I feel like it’s all intentionally being given to us”.
We'll be keeping our fingers crossed that an extended version of ’Interlude’ is en route before Wallen's 2026 Still the Problem Tour kicks off in April. Given the fact that he's been using this track as part of his now-iconic pre-show walk-outs, we think the timing would be perfect for the ‘Love Somebody’ singer-songwriter to drop the full rendition of ’Interlude’ - potentially as part of a cleverly titled Still the Problem deluxe album - shortly before he launches his next run of shows...
