Charles Kelley and his wife, Cassie Kelley, posted a ‘health update’ on social media, sharing their news that Charles Kelley has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer.
Kelley, who has always been open with his fans, particularly through his sobriety journey, spoke candidly on his stories following his announcement, sharing that he was “overwhelmed by the support”.
“It still feels like a dream, I haven’t started the treatments or anything yet.”
During his video with Cassie, Kelley told fans that after recent random rib fractures, his doctor wanted to run some blood tests and it was through this that they found his illness. But Kelley is optimistic and “feeling hopeful”.
“Other than healing up from this rib fracture and a little bit of body soreness, I feel like myself,” he said to his fans while sitting outside in the sun.
“I feel like there’s got to be purpose to everything and I really started feeling that way through my sobriety journey. I’m just hopeful, man.”
If the public comments on his post are anything to go by - the outpouring of love, support and prayers - then his private messages can only have reflected that, and then some. Fellow country music friends like Jordan Davis, Dierks Bentley, Little Big Town and many, many more are holding Kelley in their prayers.
“It has warmed my heart,” he went on to say, “I had my moments of sadness that first week we found out…I flipped the narrative in my mind and I think - mind, body, soul, faith - there’s a reason for it all. It might be to connect me with my higher power, or really soak up these moments with my family more.”
After taking the time to process the news with those closest to him, Kelley has been able to work through his diagnosis and has felt encouraged by those sharing their experiences with him.
“Sometimes these things that feel like a curse can be a blessing in disguise,” he continued, “thank y’all for the love. I’m overwhelmed with emotion, love and support.”
Charles Kelley’s band, Lady A, has new music on the way and Kelley is confident that he’s going to keep working, saying that being out there is “where I belong”.
