Darius Rucker's iconic cover of Old Crow Medicine Show's ‘Wagon Wheel’ has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, with Rucker being surprised with a plaque at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Moments before heading on stage at the renowned Red Rocks Amphitheatre of Colorado, Rucker was presented with the exclusive Spotify billions plaque in honor of the country classic.

Rucker took to Instagram to honor the significance of the award and toast to the song's original writer and recording artist, Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor, who was in attendance at Red Rock's and stood by Rucker's side as he entered the prestigious club.

"You never know where a song is going to take you... To celebrate a billion @Spotify streams of “Wagon Wheel” with @crowmedicine right before we walked out at @redrocksco made it even more special!"

As if Red Rocks couldn't get any more magical, Rucker and Old Crow Medicine Show later performed the song together in celebration of the achievement, with Rucker's leading guitar and vocals perfectly blending with the band's full string instrument set.

The song's rich history stretches back to the 1970’s and begins with a man whose impact on country and folk forever lives on - Bob Dylan. A lost idea from the folk legend himself, Dylan had written the chorus and melody and originally named the track 'Rock Me Mama,' which was found on a studio session tape titled Peco’s Blues, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid Outtakes.

Rather inspired, Secor became the mind behind the awesome world-building journey that the song takes listeners through, as he added verses and hunkered down on the concept of a hitchhiker's freedom within the track. Written in the 1990’s, and later released in 2004, Old Crow Medicine Show's original version saw success and became a highlighted triumph of the Americana and folk world.

Of course, the song's journey didn't end there. 'Wagon Wheel' would later be recorded by Rucker and released in 2013, making the song the third track on his True Believers album, and giving mainstream country a gift it can never repay, as the song's folk roots transitioned perfectly into a country cover, and was introduced to an abundance of 2010’s country fans that would've otherwise never had the pleasure.
