During one of her many acceptance speeches at last night's ACM Awards in Las Vegas, Ella Langley has expressed her gratitude to Lainey Wilson, after the latter spent time with Langley backstage and helped to calm her down while she was struggling.
While on-stage receiving the ACM Female Artist of the Year award, Langley was visibly moved, beginning, “I'm trying to get to say something but I can't”, before underlining how thankful she is to her fellow women in country music, “Thank you to women in this category, to women in this life...This is a weird thing to do”.
Langley recalls, “Today I was having a strange day. I don't know what it is about awards but I have strange days in the mornings, and I walked right into Lainey's room. I just got emotional and she hugged me, wrapped me up and started praying for me”.
The Alabama native expands, “And then all of a sudden comes Miranda Lambert in her little pink hat. I would not be standing up here without just the encouragement of so many women. Kelsea [Ballerini], thank you so much for loving on me”.
Langley concludes, “Thank you to my parents for believing in me and my family for showing up and being weird as always. It keeps me humble. Thank you Jesus for letting me do this for a living...Thank you to the ACMs, Lauren Alaina, I love you so much...Thank you to the women. I would not be standing up here without [you], so thank you”.
It was touching and heartening to see the camaraderie in this category, particularly given how contentious and competitive these awards show settings can often become. But among the ACM Female Artist of the Year nominees, there was nothing but love.
It's a testament to how the leading women in country music are making a concerted effort to lift each other up, and repeatedly calling out media-based attempts to pit female artists against one another - epitomised by coverage of Langley and Megan Moroney.
Wilson has always been renowned for her kindness and generosity within the country music landscape and beyond, so it's unsurprising to hear how she prayed for Langley when she was clearly going through a challenging moment backstage. Nonetheless, it's a heartwarming show of support from last year's Female Artist of the Year.
Alongside ACM Female Artist of the Year, Langley took home the gongs for Song of the Year and Single of the Year for ‘Choosin’ Texas’, along with trophies for Music Event of the Year (‘Don't Mind If I Do’) and Artist-Songwriter of the Year. Langley received two Song of the Year awards, due to being a co-producer on ‘Choosin‘ Texas’, as well as receiving two Single of the Year gongs as an artist and co-writer.
