Hozier Says He Was “Blown Away” When He First Heard Noah Kahan’s ‘Northern Attitude’

During a new conversation with Anthony Mason for his Alchemy video series, Hozier has reflected on his friendship with Noah Kahan, with the ‘Too Sweet’ hitmaker expressing his deep-seated admiration for Kahan's songwriting on ‘Northern Attitude’.
Originally released as a solo track as part of Kahan's groundbreaking 2022 Stick Season album, Hozier joined the Vermont native for a reimagined duet version in 2023. At the time, Kahan hailed this blockbuster collaboration as one of the proudest feats of his career to date, citing Hozier as one of his biggest musical influences.
When Hozier was named as one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2025, Kahan wrote a heartwarming tribute to the ‘Take Me to Church’ singer-songwriter, citing his catalogue of ethereal, folk-leaning odes as “the barometer for my own”. Aptly, Kahan was included on TIME Magazine's 2026 list of trailblazers.
While chatting to Mason, Hozier reflects on Kahan's homage, fondly declaring it “an incredible thing to say about somebody”, adding, “Noah is such a sweet man, you know, such a talented artist, and puts just the enormity of his heart into his work”.
Hozier expands, “And it shows. [He's an] incredible performer as well. I got to play with Noah a number of times. And when I first heard ‘Northern Attitude’, I think it was on a plane...and there was that moment”, before joking, “Can I curse on this?”
He outlines, “That's a f****** great song. That's a beautiful piece of music. I was blown away by it. Then...getting to join him on stage, there's a great sense of fun. There's a great sense of vulnerability in what he shares in his work, and what he shares of himself in his work...I'm a big, big Noah fan, so to hop on that song...it was a joy”.
In his initial TIME100 excerpt on Hozier, Kahan gushed, “When an artist can create a sound so beautiful and melancholy, so full of symbolism and truth that you feel they must be from a different time, or a better world, you can’t help but believe in magic. Hozier had me believing from the first note. His music became the barometer for my own: How can I make a song feel like an extension of my soul, the way Hozier does? How can I create a voice, a language, like he has?”
He mused, “It was easy to imagine Hozier as a folk deity in the forests of Ireland until I met him. At a festival in 2023, he asked if I wanted to sing together. I ran into him in a hotel lobby, in sweaty golf clothes with a bag of fast food in my hand - not how I envisioned this moment. Fortunately, he is as kind as they come. We spoke about the performance, and I pinched myself as I stuffed fries in my face on the way upstairs. Performing with him was one of the greatest moments of my life. And when we collaborated on my song ‘Northern Attitude’, I didn’t believe it was truly happening until I heard his voice on the track”.
Kahan concluded his message, “I’m not sure where my life would’ve gone if I hadn’t been exposed to his music. Thank you, Hozier, for sharing your gift with us mere mortals”.
It's always a treat getting to witness these two titans of the folk sphere colliding on-stage, with Hozier's haunting, otherworldly lyricism and Kahan's gut-wrenching vulnerability and ear for an infectious hook combining to create magic every time.
We're keeping our fingers crossed ‘Northern Attitude’ isn't the last time we get to hear their voices on the same track, with Kahan hopefully planning to revamp a handful of songs from his new album, The Great Divide, into duets in a similar fashion to how he re-recorded a host of stand-outs from his now-iconic Stick Season era.
