As we edge ever closer to the release date, Luke Combs has once again teased some new music from his upcoming album, The Way I Am.
The latest sound bite is Track 8, ‘Wish Upon A Whiskey’. While the song is an ‘unreleased original’, the track will be familiar to those who have seen him perform in the last twelve months as Combs debuted this one live during his 2025 Australia and New Zealand tour.
But does this clip get us excited for the album and, dare I say it, are we excited for the album at all? Can we honestly say that this is Luke Combs ‘Back in the Saddle’? Or is he just back from a sabbatical?
It seems the short answer is: yes. With over 250k combined social media views in less than 24 hours, ‘Wish Upon A Whiskey’ has fans positively desperate in the comments, begging for an immediate release. One fan commented that Combs had “released one for the lovers, now he’s releasing one for the yearners. I feel seen.”
It’s everything a classic sad boy country song needs: beautiful keys, some pensive steel and lyrics about love, loss and faith. Combined with Combs’ inimitable drawl, the song is pretty spot on.
It does, however, leave us yearning for more in the rest of the album, which seems ever so slightly lacklustre at the minute. Where’s the hype? Where are the collaborations?
Allison Krauss, who appears on the long-teased ‘Ever Mine’, is a legend of the genre. But with Combs recently joining forces on-stage with cross-genre stars like Alex Warren, this album could have been lit up a left-field feature or a fun, big-name country duet. Luke Combs ft. Shania Twain? Come on, now that’s ‘My Kinda Saturday Night’.
Alas, we digress. ‘Wish Upon A Whiskey’ is Luke Combs doing what Luke Combs does best and the people are desperate for more. Will this be his final release for the album drops on 20th March? It seems his decision to share a fresh snippet of the heartbroken track implies he's readying it for a release ahead of the full project.
Luke Combs’ sixth studio album, The Way I Am, is set for release on March 20th, 2026. Seven of the 22 songs have already been released, with ‘Wish Upon A Whiskey’ joining ‘Rethink Some Things’ as a tantalising unreleased teaser. Combs kicks off his expansive My Kinda Saturday Night Tour on 21st March in Las Vegas.

“Jack Daniels, black label
Empty dinning room table
Here we go again
Another last resort, so help me Jesus
The silence, so quiet
It's filling my mind with everything we were that wasn't
Once again, I fall to pieces
-
I gave up on a shooting star
It'd have to fall down way too far
To fix this kinda feeling that I'm feeling
I tried the back pew of that church
Read every chapter, every verse
But all my prayers, they always hit the ceiling
So I do the only thing that don't make mе feel empty
Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey
-
No chancе at redemption
When there’s no one listening
Tryna keep my head above the water
I'm my own worst enemy
Cause I just keep drowning in this Tennessee
-
I gave up on a shooting star
It'd have to fall down way too far
To fix this kinda feeling that I'm feeling
I tried the back pew of that church
Read every chapter, every verse
But all my prayers always hit the ceiling
So I do the only thing that don't make me feel empty
Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey
-
Here comes the burn
I love to hate
It’s all I got
Ever since
-
I gave up on a shooting star
It'd have to fall down way too far
To fix this kinda feeling that I'm feeling
I tried the back pew of that church
Read every chapter, every verse
But all my prayers always hit the ceiling
So I do the only thing that don't make me feel empty
Pull that bottle out and wish upon a whiskey”
