I think at this point in ‘Choosin’ Texas’ time in the spotlight, Matthew McConaughey becoming an Ella Fella was arguably something we could all see coming in 2026.
And it didn’t stop there, it turns out his viral bluegrass take on Ella Langley’s ‘Choosin’ Texas’ came together in less than a day.
Speaking to Cody Alan on SiriusXM’s The Highway, McConaughey revealed that Jimmy Fallon suggested they turn ‘Choosin’ Texas’ into a bluegrass number before the group rehearsed it that morning and performed it later that night. Given it’s broad appeal, it was a clever punt from Fallon that well and truly paid off.
The performance aired on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on August 12th as part of Fallon’s ‘Audience Suggestion Box’, with McConaughey joined by The Last Bison and Fallon himself on washboard. McConaughey is currently promoting The Rivals of Amziah King, in which he sings and plays mandolin, with The Last Bison also contributing music to the film. The planets certainly aligned for this one.
It didn’t take long for the performance to reach Langley herself. She shared the cover to Instagram Stories, writing: “I don’t think I’ll ever recover from this” before going one better at her Fort Worth show on August 15th, and using McConaughey’s version to introduce ‘Choosin’ Texas’ on stage.
Not bad for something they only started working on the morning of the performance. With ‘Choosin’ Texas’ continuing its remarkable run at the top of the charts, it seems the Ella Fellas club just keeps growing. Who's going to be ‘Choosin’ Texas’ next...?
