After announcing their long-awaited duet, ‘You Had To Be There’, Megan Moroney and Kenny Chesney have shared a new video of the duo spending time together in St. John.
As they play checkers, Moroney jokes about their heartwarming friendship in the caption, “when u haven't seen Kenny in months & u have to update him on your life & all the new tea”. The ’Tennessee Orange’ singer-songwriter then quips, “he loves it (i think)”.
The duo have become good buddies since spending much of 2024 out on the road together as part of Kenny Chesney's Sun Goes Down stadium tour. Endearingly, Megan Moroney revealed in an interview with Taste of Country that she wrote ‘You Had To Be There’ as a thank-you gift to Chesney for taking her out on the road.
Megan Moroney nervously played the song for Kenny Chesney at Christmas, sharing, “Just know that I appreciated you so much for taking me on tour, and that's what this song means to me...We don't have to cut it if you hate it. I don't wanna make you feel weird, I promise”. Thankfully, it seems Chesney loved the moving new track.
As part of the blockbuster shows, Kenny Chesney would bring out Megan Moroney to duet ‘She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy’, with Chesney even surprising Moroney during their final weekend of tour-stops at Boston's Gillette Stadium and inviting her to perform her current Country Radio single, ‘Am I Okay?’, during his headline set.
‘You Had To Be There’ arrives on May 9th, with the track seemingly exploring Megan Moroney's seven-year journey from seeing Kenny Chesney live, to then performing alongside him.
When unveiling the track earlier in the week, Kenny Chesney sweetly reflected, “As far as I know this is the first song anyone has written for me . Thank you Megan. I love ya”.
We can't wait to hear the full version, with Megan Moroney and Kenny Chesney blossoming into one of our favourite duos in modern country music. With Moroney spending a lot of time of late writing in Chesney's beloved US Virgin Islands, we're hoping we might one day get a full-blown, tropically-themed collaborative project...
