During a recent interview with Willie Geist on the TODAY Show’s Sunday Sitdown, Megan Moroney talks about how her shows are like ‘group therapy’ and the difficulties of being misunderstood.
Moroney and Geist have ridden the subway to the Barclays Center in New York City where Moroney is due to play that night. Outside the venue, they interacted with some of the Emo Cowgirl’s pink army that were keenly waiting for the evening’s show. Geist asks Moroney what it’s like to be playing the venue and she reflects on what her fans are likely up to before she takes the stage later.
“They’ve been looking forward to this since tickets went on sale…probably getting ready as we speak, probably going to grub somewhere too,” the Georgia native laughs. “You can’t go to group therapy on an empty stomach.”
Moroney’s “Emo Cowgirl” persona mirrors the emotions that she writes about. She’s a self-proclaimed overthinker and finds that she can “take those emotions and turn them into art” which, in turn, helps the myriad of fans process their own feelings, too.
“I think it’s just a collective effort in all of these venues that we’ve played,” she shares after Geist questions the meaning behind her phrase ‘group therapy’, “You’re never going to be the only person releasing whatever emotion you need to release at these shows”.
Her song, ‘Medicine’, off her newest album, Cloud 9, captures that shared release perfectly. “It’s very empowering to be in a room where everyone feels the same,” she says of performing that song. “Like, wow, this person got treated like sh*t too, and we’re angry about it together.”
Being so vulnerable in her music coupled with her successful career has its drawbacks. Moroney shares with Geist the difficulties she faced when trying to show up authentically but also maintain a private life.
“There were nights where I’d cry myself to sleep because I felt so misunderstood and I wanted to tell people everything,” Moroney speaks candidly, “...trying to find the balance of not telling everyone my entire personal life but also letting people know like this is how I feel.”
Megan Moroney, country music’s Emo Cowgirl, is clearly well loved among her fans - and the masses - with her tour near sold out and her Cloud 9 album debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. As she takes her group therapy across the pond, fans in Europe will not want to miss out.
