Post Malone has been announced as the headliner for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Closing Ceremony on Sunday, 19th July. The ceremony will take place ahead of the eagerly anticipated match-up between Spain and Argentina, following the latter's last-minute victory over England last night (Wednesday, July 15th).

Having had success in a plethora of genres ranging from rap to country, Post is undoubtedly one of the world's most versatile music stars. He isn’t just country, just rap, just pop, or just rock - he’s all of them. As a result, on a FIFA World Cup stage that is designed to unite, what better candidate to represent the country? The FIFA World Cup Closing Ceremony will also feature Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger and Robbie Williams, along with a special cameo from Tom Cruise.

It feels like an inspired choice. As anyone who's attended a Post Malone concert knows, the most striking thing isn’t just the music - it’s how inclusive his audience is. Country fans stand alongside people who discovered him through other genres, yet no one feels like they’re watching a different artist. He’s able to somehow bring everyone into the same room.

That quality makes him perfectly suited to a World Cup hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Although Post of course represents genres outside country, we can’t help but feel it’s another significant moment for country music.

The genre continues to enjoy a mainstream boom and attract new audiences this summer, epitomised by moments such as the British ITV commentary team's playful reference to Ella Langley's ‘Choosin‘ Texas’ during the England vs Croatia game.

As a result, there has already been a distinctly country flavour to this year’s tournament, with Rascal Flatts’ ‘Life Is a Highway’ used as the soundtrack for ITV's World Cup coverage. Now, having Post headline the closing ceremony feels like the US leaning proudly into a genre that forms such an important part of its culture.

Post Malone will be headlining the Closing Ceremony, which will take place before the final, while a host of other big-name artists will be taking the stage in New York for the blockbuster Half-Time Show, including Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna and BTS.

The wider line up feels like a celebration of the Americas as a whole. Justin Bieber representing Canada, Post Malone and Jennifer Hudson repping the United States, while Colombian superstar Shakira has become one of Latin America's defining stars and has many connections with the World Cup in previous years, having released one of the most iconic World Cup songs of all time in ‘Waka Waka’.

If that wasn’t enough, global hitmakers Coldplay will also perform, making the celebrations feel less like a concert and a perfect close for a tournament built on unity. Aptly, Coldplay's Chris Martin has curated the entire Half-Time Show. The show will be supporting the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which has already raised more than $50 million towards supporting education and football for children around the world, with $1 from every FIFA World Cup ticket sold going to the cause.

For country music, it is a global shop window that simply could not be much bigger.
