Thomas Rhett has started taking to TikTok to share a few sections from a devotional, with the Georgia native reading Biblical words of comfort that he finds particularly resonant.

In the latest instalment of this new video series, Rhett begins by outlining his hopes that fans enjoyed their Independence Day celebrations, “What's up, y'all? I hope everybody had an incredible time on the Fourth of July celebrating 250 years of our incredible country. So awesome, just watching fireworks, watching kids run around, just experiencing the freedom that we have here. Absolutely incredible. I love this country so much. So, hope you all had an incredible Fourth”.

He goes on to reiterate the reason why he's decided to start sharing verses from his current devotional, Jesus Calling, via social media, “I just wanted to hop back in. I posted a thing the other day, just about some devotionals I've been reading, and got a lot of great responses, and a lot of people said to keep doing it. So, I said this before, but I feel like if it impacts me, hopefully it'll impact you as well. Even though this is not today's date that I'm reading, this was July 5th in Jesus Calling - a great devotional book, if you decide that you want to do it”.

The ‘Old Tricks’ hitmaker goes on to read, from the perspective of Jesus, “This says, ‘Draw near to me with a thankful heart, aware that your cup is overflowing with blessings. Gratitude enables you to perceive me more clearly and to rejoice in our love relationship. Nothing can separate you from my loving presence. That is the basis of your security. Whenever you start to feel anxious, remind yourself that your security rests in me alone, and I am totally trustworthy. You will never be in control of your life's circumstances’”, with Rhett pausing, clearly moved by this passage, before continuing, “I will read that part again. ‘You will never be in control of your life's circumstances, but you can relax and trust in my control, instead of striving for a predictable, safe lifestyle, seek to know me in greater depth and breadth. I long to make your life a glorious adventure, but you must stop clinging to old ways. I'm always doing something new within my beloved ones. Be on the lookout for all that I prepared for you’”.

Rhett stresses that it was this line about us never being in control of what happens to us, and so we should try to let go of the need overthink and over-strategise our lives, “I read it twice, but I will say it one more time, because this part hit me like a ton of bricks. ‘You will never be in control of your life's circumstances, but you can relax and trust in my control’. That part to me is probably the area that I struggle the most, because I want to be in such control of my outcomes, future-planning for life, all the above, and I feel like the harder I try, just the more anxious I get. So I'm trying to make it a habit to remind myself that when I feel anxious, it says, ‘Remind yourself that your security rests in me alone’”.

Rhett concludes by emphasising how helpful he finds these reassuring words, “Anyway, that was good for me. Hope that hits y'all in some way today, kind of as you get back into the grind of life, but just want to say that I love y'all. Hope this is encouraging for you today. And again, happy Fourth of July weekend, happy birthday to America. Yeah, have a great day. Also, my beard is getting so grey. Love you”.

Rhett has always been open and vulnerable with this fans, with the fact that the ‘What's Your Country Song’ singer-songwriter takes a moment during the reading to share his own response to the devotional making it all the more powerful. Rhett's continued attempts to try and be in control of every detail his life and all his plans for the future, rather than leaving it up to God, is certainly a relatable struggle.

Similarly, Rhett has always made a point of discussing his Christian faith on socials and through his music, with his ‘NOTHING ELSE’ collaborator, Forrest Frank, even suggesting that Rhett might be working on a new gospel-leaning album at the moment. We wonder if these devotional videos are a clue that this is, in fact, the case.

This marks the second of Rhett's videos showcasing portions from his Jesus Calling devotional by Sarah Young, and given how uplifting this one was, we can't wait to hear the next.
