Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton. It's a partnership that feels like it's been a long time coming.
Two of the biggest voices in country music coming together to craft one blockbuster of a release? It's a collaboration that just makes sense. So much so that it feels like it should have happened well-before now. Thankfully, they've just remedied that with the release of 'A Song To Sing'.
While this isn't their first co-write or performance together, 'A Song To Sing' marks their first official duet, a release that solidifies both party's superstardom and place at the tip-top of the country genre's finest.
The heart of 'A Song To Sing' is carried on a sashaying Seventies-era groove, led by pillowy rhythms, breezy synths and atmospheric strings. It's a sound that embodies Stapleton's soulful influences and pairs well with Lambert's vocal power. The essence of the composition is mostly subdued, allowing both of their voices the opportunity to stand out and their heartfelt message to shine through.
"After all this time
Runnin’ up and down the roads
Boulevards and Broken Dreams
All the in-betweens
Every single high and low
I want you to know"
Whether platonic, romantic or otherwise, relationships, the ones that endure, often experience trials and strains and must undergo certain tests at times. It's a fact.
Lambert and Stapleton lay this all out at the start of 'A Song To Sing', mapping out the ups and downs, the highs and lows and all that comes with loving and committing to someone.
Through all of that, at the end of the day, there is one message that rings true no matter what:
"You are a part of me
Baby you’re the heart of me
Together we can write a song to sing
And in that melody
Baby you’re the harmony
That you just can’t find anywhere"
No matter the stumbles and strife, the love they feel for their respective people is unending. Together, Lambert and Stapleton sing of a love that has its own rhythm and melody, a sound they know by heart and one only they can discern and understand. It's familiar, it's beautiful and it's on repeat for eternity.
It's the sound that calls them home to their beloveds – they sing: "I love the way it goes / When I hear the melody / Imma find my way back home to you" – and signals how right they are for one another, as they add, "I know with every note / You and I are meant to be / Sounds so good to me."
"And when this world wants to lay
Everything heavy on our shoulders
I stand with you side by side
Forever and a day"
By the end of the song, the collaborators seem unconcerned with what struggles and tests may be waiting just ahead. Whatever the future holds, whatever burdens come to rest on their shoulders, they have a song that lives inside of them, one that will lift the weight, guide them forward and through to the other side.
"You are a part of me
Baby you’re the heart of me (Baby you’re a part of me)
Together we can write a song to sing
And in that melody
Baby you’re the harmony"
That you just can’t find anywhere
Ahead of the song's release, Lambert was the only one to remark on the collaboration, sharing how Stapleton's own experiences in life and love lent to the sincerity of their new tune.
“Chris understands this emotion from the inside out, because he and [his wife and collaborator] Morgane have both lived it,” Lambert shared in a statement, describing feeling grateful to have had his input on the song. “To have someone so soulful and willing to go into the heart of the feelings, to share the pull of the road and creative life – and what that means when you love someone with every bit of your being is next level. When we finished it, we both knew we wanted to release it, to share it with everyone.”
