Kacey Musgraves' seventh studio album, Middle Of Nowhere, bursts with clever lyrics and playful melodies distilled from what Musgraves described as a place of "aloneness, not loneliness."

Middle of Nowhere is like coming home for Musgraves. She’s returned to a more classic country sound, stepping away from the ethereal melodies of Deeper Well and leaning into a style that’s more akin to Golden Hour and as playful Same Trailer Different Park.

Written with esteemed country music songwriter, Luke Laird, and queen of pop hits Steph Jones, 'Mexico Honey' plays on the sweet nectar of the Latin American country, personifying it and assimilating it to her lover. The track leans into the playful, flirty side of the album, matching the energy of songs like ‘Dry Spell.'

The way Musgraves delivers the verses transmits a seductive excitement, conveyed by lines like "I’m in a bad-girl good mood" and "make me wanna take it back, back, back to your place."

We flow with her while the night changes, diverted back to "his" place where she shares her vulnerability. The chorus evokes a lighthearted intimate scene with meaningful humour and sensual touches that dissolves layers of Musgraves’ front, “you say you’ve always had to be so tough but not in front of me."

We learn through her lyrics that this isn’t just about lust for Musgraves. “Don’t wake me up if it’s all a dream, I don’t think you really know what you do to me,” tell us that she’s let her guard down with this person and has perhaps held a flame for longer than they realise.

As they “ride this wave ‘til it breaks,” and she knows she’s “gonna cry when I have to leave,” Musgraves must take the low after the high and pay the price for the delectable Mexico honey.

“I don’t have to navigate nobody’s drama, I don’t have to like all your friends… or your mama” reads like freedom, like relief. And in some ways, it is.
