The Background

Towards the later half of May 2026, a handful of mysterious billboards started popping up around Nashville teasing new music from Lainey Wilson. Before long, Lainey revealed she'd be releasing her next single, ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’, at the start of June.

But then, to fans’ surprise, when the song arrived, it was listed as a collaboration with guitar maestro, John Mayer. Although Mayer doesn't contribute any vocals, the ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room‘ hitmaker plays electric and acoustic guitar. Mayer is also credited as a co-producer on this soulful new offering.

The Sound

Compared to the uptempo, honky-tonkin’ feel of ‘Can't Sit Still’, ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’ finds Lainey dialling things back a little and slipping back into the more mellow, rose-tinted ambience of fan-favourites like ‘Watermelon Moonshine’ and ‘Good Horses’.

Given the kind-hearted, loving nature of the narrative, it only feels right that this is reflected in the warm, cushioning feel of the instrumental, with Mayer's simmering electric guitar injecting an added sense of romance and passion into the underlying ambience.

The Meaning

Throughout ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’, Lainey admits that she can sometimes be a bit of a scatter-brain (a very relatable trait). And given how many commitments, shows and high-profile appearances Lainey manages to fulfil - as we saw on her 2026 Keepin‘ Country Cool documentary on Netflix - we think she can be forgiven if she occasionally forgets some items when she's dashing to leave the house.

But Lainey then shares that, no matter how much of a rush she's in, there are a few things she will never forget, and that she describes as her “surefires” for navigating life. Endearingly, these are: “Jesus, Jones, Mama / My phone, keys, wallet, and you”.

Ultimately, ‘Phone, Keys, Wallet’ is a touching ode to her husband, Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges, as the Louisiana native serenades him and underlines how important he is to her.

The fact that she juxtaposes the uber-practical things she needs in life - her phone, wallet and keys - with the more spiritually and emotionally vital - Jesus, George Jones’ music, her mother and her husband - accentuates the song's heartwarming feel.

“When I’m 10 minutes late
Rushing like a hurricane through the house
Might leave the iron plugged in
But I got the surefires ironed out

-

Can’t fit ’em all in my pocket
But I got a little list of go-tos
And that’s Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you

-

Boy, you know I’d lose my head
If it wasn’t attached
Got a couple screws loose
Be up a creek if I ever forget
What keeps the ground
Underneath my two boots
I’d be out of luck, lost
If I ever up and lose
And that’s Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you

-

I reach for ’em in the morning
At night I’m getting better sleep
When you’re laying in my bed
And the rest are all there at arm’s length

-

If it all went to hell,
Lord knows what the hell I’d ever do
Without Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you

-

Boy, you know I’d lose my head
If it wasn’t attached
Got a couple screws loose
Be up a creek if I ever forget
What keeps the ground
Underneath my two boots
I’d be out of luck, lost
If I ever up and lose
Yeah, Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you

-

Boy, you know I’d lose my head
If it wasn’t attached
Got a couple screws loose
Be up a creek if I ever forget
What keeps the ground
Underneath my two boots
I’d be out of luck, lost
If I ever up and lose
Yeah, Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you

-

Jesus, Jones, Mama
My phone, keys, wallet, and you”
