It seems like there's no bad blood between Drake and Ella Langley, despite the latter blocking Drake from occupying the entire Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten last month, with the Toronto rapper playing Langley's hit single, ‘Choosin‘ Texas’, during a Houston club set.
A video has started circulating of the self-professed ‘6 God’ playing ’Choosin‘ Texas’ in a Houston club, with Drake showing love to Langley's viral, record-breaking anthem.
Some fans were surprised to see Drake including this track in his setlist, given the fact that ‘Choosin’ Texas’ was the song that prevented him from securing the whole Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 when he released his three albums, ICEMAN, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR. Songs like ‘Janice STFU’, ‘National Treasures’, ‘Ran to Atlanta’, ‘Whisper My Name’, ‘Shabang’, ‘Make Them Cry’ and ‘Dust’ all made it into the Top Ten, but ‘Choosin’ Texas’ held its own at No. 5 on the May 30th ranking.
Drake has always been particular about which songs he plays whenever he is on a live stream or delivering a club set, with the ‘Know Yourself’ hitmaker having no qualms about asking streamers not to play songs by artists like The Weekend in the past.
So his decision to play ‘Choosin’ Texas’ feels like a pointed homage to Langley, with Drake underlining he's a fan and he's not salty about being blocked from a full Top Ten spread.
It's not the first time, of course, that Drake has showcased his love of country music, with the ‘Hotline Bling’ chart-topper name-checking Morgan Wallen on his HABIBTI stand-out, ‘White Bone’, as well as recruiting Wallen for his ‘You Broke My Heart’ video in 2023, and joining the country titan for his Houston walk-out last year.
Rumours continue to swirl around a Drake and Wallen collaboration, with fans still hoping Wallen has plans to drop an extended version of his I'm the Problem ‘Interlude’ with the rapper.
Elsewhere in his career, Drake has penned lyrics about artists like George Strait and Shania Twain, and the Canada native regularly expresses his penchant for country music culture.
We'll have to wait and see whether this almost-mythologised link-up ever materialises, but perhaps we should also be keeping an eye out for a Drake and Langley collaboration...
