During a resurfaced interview, Ella Langley reflects on knowing Megan Moroney since she was a teenager, and underlines that she always suspected she had what it takes to make it.

While chatting to Zak Kuhn for the Zak Kuhn Show in 2023, shortly before she had her first major break-out hit, ‘you look like you love me’, Langley opens up about her friendship with her Columbia Records label-mate, “Yeah, I've known Meg...‘Cause she was going to UGA the same time I was going to Auburn. I was in a sorority, she was too”.

The ‘Choosin’ Texas’ hitmaker reveals that they even booked a writing session, but didn't end up with a song, “We didn't actually meet until we wrote together...We didn't even get a song this day. We just hung out the whole entire write. We scheduled a write and then just hung out and didn't write a song, which makes sense”.

Langley goes on, “But no, we've known about each other since...I was like, 18, 19”, before implying the ‘Tennessee Orange’ singer-songwriter's talent was always apparent, “I knew as soon as Meg moved here that [she'd make it]...I was waiting on that”.

Langley touches on the generally supportive atmosphere among artists when they're trying to find their footing in the Nashville scene, “I think overall everyone's just so dang focussed on what they're doing that and then just excited for everyone else”.

It's a heartening conversation, especially when viewed in light of the subsequent attempts by the media to create a narrative of rivalry between Langley and Moroney.

After the rumoured love triangle involving Riley Green, speculation started flying about whether Langley and Moroney still get along. And admittedly, they don't follow one another on Instagram, but we're hoping there's no major bad blood between them, especially given the fact that they're two of the biggest stars in modern country.

For instance, when Moroney's Cloud 9 hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Langley's ‘Choosin’ Texas’ was at the peak of the Billboard Hot 100, both artists took to Instagram to celebrate this huge achievement. Moroney gushed, “Let's go girlssss”, while Langley commented a simple white heart, hopefully indicating that, beneath all the conjecture and rumours, there's a sense of camaraderie between them.

And this friendship and feeling of everyone being in it together, which Langley references in her interview with Kuhn, is one of the great elements of today's country music landscape.

As female artists like Langley, Moroney, Lainey Wilson and Miranda Lambert continue to dominate the space, it's refreshing to continually hear everyone lifting one another up in interviews, rather than succumbing to attempts to pit them against each other.

We're also hoping that Langley and Moroney find time soon to hit the writing room once again, as this collaboration would undoubtedly be a colossal moment for the genre.
