As the drama ramps up in Marshals Season 2, Luke Grimes is explaining why the creative team wanted to reintroduce Jimmy - played by Jefferson White - to the Yellowstone universe.
Grimes - who plays Kayce Dutton - chats to ScreenRant about the latest instalment in Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spin-off, underlining why Kayce needs help in this season.
Grimes reflects, “Clearly, Kayce's having a hard time juggling running this ranch, being a father, being a Marshal. Now he wants to start this equine-therapy centre for veterans. That's a lot to do, and he finds himself needing some help”.
He touches on how Jimmy has a lingering sense of owing the Dutton family, due to how John Dutton - played by Kevin Costner - took him under his wing and helped him get his life back on track, “Jimmy...feels he has a debt to John Dutton, for kind of saving his life, and putting him on this great new path, and making him into this cowboy, you know. Out of the debt to that, he comes to help Kayce out”.
Grimes shares how refreshing it's been getting to build a new dynamic between these characters, especially given how their paths didn't really cross in Yellowstone.
Grimes muses, “We didn't have any relationship in Yellowstone, like, we were never in scenes together, barely ever. I was never in the bunkhouse. You know, I was in my own sort of world. So we're actually, like, building this brand new relationship that these two characters never really had before, which has been really fun”.
Grimes’ Marshals co-star, Ash Santos - who plays Andrea Cruz - stresses how fun it's been having White join the cast, “He has such vivacious energy, like, he's so bright, when he comes on set. He just kind of like lights the whole set up. And yeah, I have had the chance to work with him now, we've had a few scenes together”.
Santos pays tribute to White's playful, unscripted moments, “I love, like, the little like improv he throws into the scenes, because it's always so funny...He's a wonderful actor”.
Jimmy was a fan-favourite character in the original Yellowstone series, with many fans hoping the rumoured 6666 Ranch spin-off would give us a chance to follow his story.
When that spin-off was scrapped, fans resigned themselves to never seeing Jimmy in the Yellowstone universe again. But now, through Marshals, he's making his triumphant return as a skilled cowboy and a much maturer man than he was at the start.
We're still keeping our fingers crossed that we'll get a crossover between Marshals and Dutton Ranch, which stars Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler). Grimes and Reilly have both confirmed it's something they've discussed.
With many more episodes left in Marshals Season 2, there's plenty of time for a Texas excursion which could, serve as a heartwarming reunion for the Dutton siblings, Kayce and Beth.
