Morgan Wallen has opened up about how he put together his I'm the Problem tracklist in a way that would keep listeners engaged over the course of a whopping 37 songs.

Wallen's lengthy album tracklists have become a major talking-point since Dangerous, which consisted of 30 songs. Every subsequent project has featured more songs than the last, with Wallen's approach altering the genre's wider outlook on albums, as many artists attempt to emulate his hugely successful strategy.

While the ‘Thought You Should Know’ hitmaker continues to come under fire for ‘gaming’ streaming figures and chart positions by including so many songs, at the end of the day, there is an appetite for this wealth of music. Otherwise, his albums wouldn't still be near the pinnacle of the Billboard 200 charts years after their release.

During a new episode of Morgan Wallen Radio, the Sneedville megastar shares how he found it difficult while finalising I'm the Problem to decide on which last-minute songs to include, “The challenging thing about adding songs to the album at the end of the process is because, you know, sometimes you don't have that extra time to live with the songs, so you have to make quicker decisions. Luckily, throughout my career, a lot of those decisions that we've made have been right”.

He goes on to discuss how he and his collaborators approached the tracklisting for I'm the Problem, his 2025 opus, in a similar way to 2023's One Thing At A Time.

Wallen reflects, “For I'm the Problem, I think we took a similar approach as we did on One Thing At A Time. It was a little bit different, because there were more right-down-the-middle country songs. You know, we did two country, one ‘cross’, is what we called it”.

He concludes, “We did two country, one alternative. I think it helps keep the album from being repetitive. It keeps it, you know, feeling fresh throughout. Anytime you've got 37 songs, you have to figure out a way to make it not, you know, monotonous”.

This methodology undoubtedly comes across, with Wallen nimbly striking a balance between the classic country storytelling of gems like ‘Number 3 and Number 7’, ‘Jack and Jill’, ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ and ‘Superman’ with more surprising, genre-blurring offerings like the trap-infused ‘Miami’ and the indie-rock-leaning ‘Genesis’.

It's a fascinating insight into the engine room of Wallen's camp as they put together these wildly popular bodies of work, and how he is is conscious that, given how long his albums are, there is greater pressure on him to switch it up and keep fans entertained.

He certainly achieves this on the refreshingly eclectic and diverse I'm the Problem, and with recent singles like ‘Been By Now’ and ‘Last Thing You Need’ hinting again at a desire to blend country with pop and Hip-Hop, we're excited to hear his next chapter.

At this rate, it could feasibly push beyond 40 songs in length. But as long as he sticks to his tracklisting blueprint, he'll have listeners in the palm of his hand from start to finish.
