During a new appearance on Theo Von's This Past Weekend podcast, Riley Green has admitted he wishes he would've done some things differently with his role on Marshals.
Green made a surprise cameo during the first season of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spin-off, which stars Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) as a newly recruited US Marshal in Montana. Green enters the fray partway through Season One as Garrett, an old army buddy of Kayce, who suffers from some serious PTSD. Garrett, much like Green, is a country music musician hailing from Alabama.
Green, who was touring while flying out periodically to shoot Marshals, reflects on how he felt somewhat underprepared for the role, due to the hectic nature in which he filmed it.
Green begins by touching on how he was initially drawn to Garrett due to it feeling like an extension of himself, rather than a role that was starkly different to his on-stage persona.
The Alabama native begins by pointing out that Theo also has on-screen experience, “I know you've done some acting...I imagine in your role, you went into something that wasn't too far of a stretch from what you do and who you are. So I did Marshals... with Luke. It was great. And I didn't want to take a role that was crazily different. You know? I wanted something that I could ease into and introduce myself into that world, and then kind of go on. That's how I am with music”.
Green expands, “I might try a song that stylistically is a little different than what I normally do, but it's not going to be...straight pop. You know? I'm not going to do something totally different. I think melody-wise, I'll try some things out and see if it works. But keeping that familiarity and what you've done well for so long, I think is extremely important now, because I think the best thing you can be is different. Not necessarily from something you've done before, but from everybody else”.
Elsewhere during their conversation, Green candidly explains why he looks back on some aspects of his Marshals experience with a slight sense of regret, “I was on tour and we were filming in Park City, Utah, for Marshals. So I was flying every week to Utah, playing three or four days, or filming and go play shows and fly back”.
The ‘Worst Way’ hitmaker concludes, “I feel like I didn't know enough about the character. Like, I was getting the script for that day, and I didn't know any of the backstory. So when I went and watched it, there were so many things I would have done differently, if I'd have known this about the character or that. And I would have really enjoyed it if I could've just lived in that world and filmed for a month, you know?”
It shows how seriously Green is taking his foray into the acting world that he scrutinises his performance in this way, with the ’Different ’Round Here’ singer-songwriter outlining in other interviews that he's keen to continue venturing into the on-screen space.
While a return to Season Two of Marshals is - without giving away any spoilers - highly unlikely, we'd love to see Sheridan taking another shot with Green in one of his many shows.
In his recent music video for ‘Think As You Drunk’, Green showcases how - unlike many artists that have attempted to make the transition from music to acting - he has a great deal of confidence and charisma on-camera. We'd love to see him doing more, particularly if he can find some quieter stretches in his touring schedule.
Green is currently gearing up to release his eagerly anticipated new album, That's Just Me, which features the already-out singles, ’Go Again’ with Hannah McFarland, ‘Think As You Drunk’ and ‘My Way’, the latter of which featured in Season One of Marshals.
