Kenny Chesney is underlining his appreciation for Megan Moroney, after the duo linked up on ‘It Just Got Weird’, one of the stand-outs from Chesney's new album, Silver Sands Marina.
The song sparked surprise from many listeners, who had assumed it would be a playful, tongue-in-cheek offering. Instead, it serves as a wistful meditation on how quickly a relationship can sour, sometimes due to one seemingly insignificant phrase or act.
While chatting to TODAY, Chesney shares why he wanted the ‘Tennessee Orange’ singer-songwriter to join him, “I felt like it needed the female perspective on that song, and of course, you know, Megan and I have become great friends”.
The No Shoes Nation flag-bearer stresses why Moroney's complementary vocals were integral to how the track lands, “She has this very unique voice that fit perfectly on the song, because her voice is very strong, but it's also simultaneously very vulnerable. And I'm so happy that we did it together. She's just wonderful”.
Although Moroney's contributions to ’It Just Got Weird’ are subtle, with the Georgia native providing background vocals during the hook, they definitely enhance the emotionality.
As Chesney outlines, Moroney's vocals transform this intimate offering into a dialogue, with the artists stepping into the shoes of the two soon-to-be-exes in the song's narrative.
It's one of many curveballs on Silver Sands Marina, with Chesney showcasing his versatility on wonderfully inventive and left-field gems like ‘Shot A Car Into Space’ and ‘Goldfish’. The latter features stellar guest vocals from up-and-comer, Lily Meola.
With Chesney returning to the road for the first time since 2024 next summer on his Original Vibe Room Tour with Eric Church, we're hoping we get to see Moroney joining the ‘I Go Back’ hitmaker to perform ‘It Just Got Weird’ at some of these stadium shows.
