“I'm Very Proud To Have Her On There”: Kenny Chesney on His New Megan Moroney Duet, ‘It Just Got Weird’

One of the most eagerly anticipated songs on Kenny Chesney's new album, Silver Sands Marina, is undoubtedly his collaboration with Megan Moroney, ‘It Just Got Weird’.

Aside sparking intrigue with the fascinating, eye-catching title and the song's relatable premise, it marks the second link-up between Chesney and his good friend, Moroney.

The duo became close pals while out on the road together in 2024 as part of Chesney's Sun Goes Down Tour, before joining forces for the CMA-nominated ‘You Had To Be There’.

While that was a high-octane, celebratory full-circle anthem reflecting on an incredible few months performing together, ‘It Just Got Weird’ promises to be a very different collaboration.

During an appearance with Katie Neal on Katie and Company, while delving into Silver Sands Marina as a whole, Chesney shares how Moroney ended up appearing on the song.

Chesney begins by joking, “She's friends with Jessie Jo [Dillon] too, so she called and told me she heard it. And you know Megan has a unique way of twisting my arm...!”

He goes on, “So she came into the studio and just put her vocal on it and it sounded like, and I mean this in the most positive way, when you hear this song on the record it sounds like Megan's been up all night. She just sings with such richness. Her vocal has so much to it...Obviously her vocal is very strong, but for it to be that strong and sometimes sassy and fun, almost simultaneously it can be vulnerable”.

The ‘No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems’ hitmaker goes on to underline how glad he is that Moroney could be a part of ‘It Just Got Weird’, “I'm very proud to have her on there”.

Moroney's appearance on Silver Sands Marina - along with the likes of Colbie Caillat and Lily Meola - ensures the excitement is through-the-roof ahead of the project's arrival on Friday, September 25th. Judging by the singles so far, the record is set to be a powerful combination of nostalgia, serenity, heartbreak and - of course - hope.

It wouldn't be a Chesney record if there wasn't an undercurrent of joy and optimism fuelling it, but the Knoxville native showcases his versatility on more pared-down, introspective offerings like ‘Burn My Boat’ and the wistful, bittersweet title-track.

Based on what Chesney has been sharing so far, it seems ‘It Just Got Weird’ will be another refreshing curveball for fans, with the song not as light-hearted as the title suggests.

He again emphasises in this insightful conversation with Neal that he'd been sitting on ‘It Just Got Weird’ for a long time, and Silver Sands Marina just felt like the right home for it.
