The Background:
Lady A is no stranger to delivering raw, vulnerable music and this song is nothing short of that. The first track off their 10th studio album, ‘Bigger Picture’ is one of their most vulnerable moments yet, particularly with the recent news of Charles Kelley’s cancer diagnosis.
Written by Trannie Anderson, Devin Dawson, Paul Sikes, Andy Albert and produced by Jay Joyce, the track encourages belief in the face of adversity. It reminds us to be tenacious, even when we’re not sure why, because that’s what it means to have faith.
The Sound:
‘Bigger Picture’ carries a soft melody, with gentle acoustic guitar, delicate keys and an echo of steel to enunciate the track’s vulnerability. The second verse opens up slightly with a stronger back beat that runs through the second half of the song. The lyrics are the focal point, with the trio’s vocals dancing across the highly emotive track.
The Meaning:
This song is about holding onto faith and believing in Him. The Bigger Picture? God’s Plan. Lady A explores some of the most deeply painful scenarios in anyone’s life, the gut-wrenching frustration that follows and the impossibly difficult belief in the Bigger Picture.
It is in the most vulnerable moments in life that stimulates the question, ‘why’? Lady A lilts on divorce, miscarriage and terminal illness - life’s truly challenging battles - with the message that He sees the whole story while you’re experiencing ‘one little frame at a time’.
The song reignites trust with Him and reassures us that however dark the days get and however hard the nights feel, He’s working on the Bigger Picture and, at some point, He’ll show it to you. And it’ll be beautiful.
What has Lady A said about 'Bigger Picture'?
“The day before we went into the studio to finish up our next record, this song was sent to Hillary. We felt its message so deeply and knew it needed to be on the next record, so we cut it the next day,” explains Lady A’s Dave Haywood. “Then, a week later, we learned of Charles’ cancer diagnosis. God’s timing in allowing this song to find us and the message behind it is truly carrying us right now. We can’t help but think there are more people who might need to hear it too. We trust there’s a bigger picture.”

"I’ve seen I do go from better or worse
To a court room deciding what’s his and what’s hers
I’ve seen two lines in a room painted pink
12 week appointment, can’t find a heartbeat
I’ve seen remission going on five years
When that hold your breath scan doesn’t come back clear
-
Sometimes I shout when I’m praying my prayers
Can You even hear me up there?
-
It’s hard to believe it
When all that we’re seeing
Is one little frame at a time
We all have our version
Of our picture perfect
But He has one better in mind
There’s days when I doubt it
Got questions about it
But God knows I gotta believe
He’s painting a bigger picture for me
-
There’s times I’m frustrated and I don’t understand
And I just wanna steal that brush out of His hand
But when all the colours finally come together
And know that I don’t know better
-
It’s hard to believe it
When all that we’re seeing
Is one little frame at a time
We all have our version
Of our picture perfect
But He has one better in mind
There’s days when I doubt it
Got questions about it
But God knows I gotta believe
He’s painting a bigger picture for me
-
When I’m going through it
I can’t help but zoom in
Then I remember
I’m only human
-
It’s hard to believe it
When all that we’re seeing
Is one little frame at a time
We all have our version
Of our picture perfect
But He has one better in mind
There’s days when I doubt it
Got questions about it
But God knows I gotta believe
He’s painting a bigger picture for me
-
I know there's a bigger picture"
