The Background:

When Zach Bryan added ‘Dog Days’ into his 2026 With Heaven On Tour setlist in October, it was around the same time he'd started teasing a collaboration with Turnpike Troubadours. As a result, many fans assumed this was the song they'd joined forces on.

But when Bryan eventually unveiled the official tracklist for his 2026 EP, Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, he confirmed ‘Dog Days’ was a solo cut and Turnpike were instead featured on ‘Plainsman’. ‘Dog Days’ is one of the more energetic anthems from the project, with Bryan defiantly declaring, “Welcome to hard times”.

The Sound:

While much of Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs feels decidedly stripped-back and pared-down, ‘Dog Days’ is a rousing, uptempo battle-cry in the mould of ‘Revival’.

Bryan half-roars the hook as he proudly professes, “I ain't a boy, darlin’, I'm all the way grown”, across a galvanising sea of guitars. The switch-up on ‘Dog Days’ highlights once again the ‘Something in the Orange’ singer-songwriter's impressive versatility. There's a certain Springsteen-esque, fist-in-the-air ambience throughout.

The Meaning:

Across ‘Dog Days’, Bryan carries a sense of swagger as he admits he's made some mistakes during the “tumultuous times” of his youth. He puts part of his rowdy, rough-around-the-edges spirit on the fact that he hasn't ever eaten “from a silver spoon”.

The song opens with a clip from the 2012 film, The Place Beyond The Pines, when Robin - played by Ben Mendelsohn - says to Luke - played by Ryan Gosling, “You know somethin', Luke? If you ride like lightin', you're gonna crash like thunder”.

It feels like a nod to Bryan's wilder days, a key theme of Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, as he suggests he would've crashed ‘like thunder’ if he'd stayed on that path.

The titular phrase, ‘Dog Days’, of course, famously refers the hottest, most uncomfortable stretch of the summer, seemingly hinting at a tough, formative period for Bryan.

It's a rebellious battle-cry for the underdogs, with Bryan exploring how he came from humble beginnings, and was repeatedly told from the outset that he wasn't destined for greatness. After a series of missteps and wrong-turns, our narrator arrives at the conclusion that this bizarre, misunderstood life in the spotlight is a marathon, not a sprint (“On the day I was born / They told me I was never gonna be somethin' / Gotta make it through them dog days, darlin' / If you wanna go far, then you oughta go long / But I ain't a boy, darlin', I'm all the way grown”).

It ties in with the reminiscent thread woven through Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, and it makes sense that this was the project Bryan chose to write a memoir for.

“You know somethin', Luke?
If you ride like lightin', you're gonna crash like thunder

-

Welcome to dog days, darlin'
Welcome to hard times, too
All the tumultuous times of my stubborn youth
Just the trouble in you
-
I was born in dog days, darlin'
I ain't ever eat from a silver spoon
All this bureaucratic, gotta-have-it, service-level shit's
Got me feeling blue
-
On the day I was born
They told me I was never gonna be somethin'
Gotta make it through them dog days, darlin'
If you wanna go far, then you oughta go long
But I ain't a boy, darlin', I'm all the way grown
-
Welcome to hard work, brother
Welcome to me working harder
Welcome to me being stronger for longer
And always goin' just a little bit farther
Let me tell you about the dog days, darlin'
Let me tell you about writin' a song
Let me tell you about writin' things down your whole life
Just to spend it rightin' your wrongs

-

Welcome to dog days, darlin'
Welcome to young manhood
Welcome to everything you ever said and everything you ever did
Been misunderstood
-
On the day I was born
They told me I would never be somethin'
Gotta make it through them dog days, darlin'
If you wanna go far, then you oughta go long
But I ain't a boy, darlin', I'm all the way grown
-
But I ain't a boy, darlin', I'm all the way grown
But I ain't a boy, darlin', I'm all the way grown
But I ain't a boy, darlin', I am all the way grown”
