The Background:

One of the most keenly anticipated songs on Zach Bryan's 2026 Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs EP, ‘Lodi When’ finds the ‘Something in the Orange’ hitmaker reflecting on his past. He wonders aloud whether, if he had to write a book about his life, what are the parts he'd pick out and focus on from his journey. Bryan first teased ‘Lodi When’ via a social media snippet in early July 2026.

Somewhat aptly, Bryan announced he would be releasing an “in-depth” memoir alongside his 2026 EP, Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, with the book being called the same name. This makes ‘Lodi When’ feel like the cornerstone of the project.

The Sound:

While much of Bryan's 2026 album, With Heaven On Top, was permeated by an introspective, meditative songwriting style, with the emphasis perhaps being taken away from the hooks, on ‘Lodi When’, the country-folk titan serves up an earworm chorus.

But that doesn't mean he eschews his trademark weighty and rich lyricism - he just pairs these nostalgic musings with an joyful, uptempo instrumental and sinuous core melody. The sleek, bright harmonies throughout the hook take centre-stage here.

The Meaning:

Throughout ‘Lodi When’, Bryan reflects on the ‘story’ of his life so far, with all the frustrating wrong-turns and alcohol-fuelled missteps washing over him in tandem with the shimmering highlights and euphoric triumphs. He wonders whether he would include the darker or lighter moments if he had to compile everything into a book.

The titular line seemingly refers to Lodi in California, with one of the pivotal questions our protagonist asks revolving around the possibility of either falling back into the arms of an ex, or returning to Lodi. It's not clear why he is toying with the idea of going back to Lodi, which only adds to the intrigue. Is another old flame there? Is this where he had a formative experience? As is so often the case with Bryan's storytelling, he forces the listener to fill in the blanks as they attempt to create a vibrant, broader picture, leaving each listener with a uniquely formed vignette.

“How just yesterday I was a younger man
And tomorrow I'll be dead
I found you in the in-between
And you'll live forever in my head

-

If you could write a book on the man that you once were
Would you write about drinking or would you write about her?
If you could just go back to the places you once been
Would you run back to her arms or back to Lodi when
He made a big mess of all the songs he wrote
Sing to you come daylight, die before he woke

-

Sung about tomorrow today
How the time stays tickin' away
Some dreamer took the wrong train in Lodi when
And thought he needed saving again

-

If you knew every answer to every question why
Would you have chasеd the fear, boy, and looked hеr in the eye?
If you could write a book on the man that you once were
Would you write of the pain, boy, or would you write the cure?

-

And all of this time you spent lookin' for a savior
Back in Lodi when you was young
Just to find out you can save yourself
Back in Lodi when you were strong
And all of this time you spent lookin' for a savior
Back in Lodi when you was young
Just to find out you can save yourself
Back in Lodi when you were strong

-

Some song about tomorrow today
How the time stays tickin' away
Some dreamer took the wrong train in Lodi when
And thought he needed saving again

-

If you could write a book on the man that you once were
Would you write about drinking or would you write about her?
If you could just go back to the places you once been
Would you run back to her arms or back to Lodi when?”
