The explosive first couple of episodes of Dutton Ranch, Taylor Sheridan's latest Yellowstone spin-off, are finally out, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their roles as fan-favourite characters, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, for a brand new chapter.
In an eye-opening interview discussing her role with RadioTimes, Reilly admits she thought Beth's story was finished following the conclusion of Yellowstone Season 5 in 2024.
Reilly, whose character, Beth, is undoubtedly one of the most beloved members of the Yellowstone universe, begins, “Cole and I are starting again in a new show, in a new world, new cast, new crew, new location. We're taking on these characters that we know really well but putting them in something completely different”.
Reilly confesses, “I didn't actually think [Dutton Ranch] would ever happen, because people move on and different shows to be made. We had really completed Yellowstone”.
Reilly recalls the dramatic finale of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2, when, after a bloody battle, Beth addresses her late father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), at his funeral, ““She says to her dad, ‘We won’, at this coffin, and it really felt like an ending”.
Reilly expands, “And for Beth and Rip and Carter to go off into a place in Montana where nobody is actually looking to take over their land, for them to live sort of quietly, felt like a new beginning for them. Do we just see their life in Montana? Or do we take all of it away and get them to start again? And that then really sort of felt like it was ripping off the plaster, and, like, really going for something different”.
Reilly and Hauser hinted in an interview recorded around the final season of Yellowstone that Beth and Rip would struggle to ever live a truly ‘peaceful’ life, because of the chaos that follows them. Looking back on that conversation now, it feels almost prophetic, given the turmoil they have experienced in Dutton Ranch so far.
While sequels and spin-offs can sometimes feel forced and commercially-motivated, there's no question that there was a massive appetite from fans for Dutton Ranch. Beth and Rip have been two of the most popular characters from Yellowstone since it first aired back in 2018, and their tumultuous love-story served as one of the most captivating elements of Sheridan's blockbuster neo-Western series.
Judging by the first two episodes, which were released this past weekend, Dutton Ranch has been crafted in a similarly meticulous fashion to the original Yellowstone series, with the show being permeated by a sense of artistic sensitivity and depth that was also laced into the two brilliant prequels, 1883 and 1923. Marshals, by contrast, has been built around a soap-style format in the mould of 9-1-1.
We're excited to see what's to come from Beth and Rip as Dutton Ranch progresses, with the married couple contending with a burgeoning threat from the nearby 10 Petals Ranch, run by newcomer Annette Bening, who plays matriarch Beulah Jackson. New episodes of Dutton Ranch air every Friday at 12am PT / 8am UK.
