The Background:
First teased in July 2026, ‘Backwards’ was later confirmed as one of the tracks on Zach Bryan's Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs EP. It ties in with the overarching theme - captured by the album cover, which sees Bryan shooting a doppelgänger - of following a protagonist who looks back at the older version of himself.
Despite not having a big-name feature like ‘Lies’ with Lana Del Rey or ‘Plainsman’ with Turnpike Troubadours, ‘Backwards’ was one of the most eagerly anticipated songs on Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, with the ‘Something in the Orange’ singer-songwriter having performed it throughout his 2026 tour.
The Sound:
It's one of the more country-leaning offerings on the EP, with Bryan delivering each line with a sense of resilience, despite touching on moments he'd rather not have to remember.
The hook, like so many songs on Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, revolves around an infectious melody, with the guitars combining to elevate this into a triumphant battle-cry.
The Meaning:
The opening verse finds our protagonist talking candidly with his mother, as he discusses an ex that he feels has betrayed him. He viscerally describes the sense of being backstabbed (“Well, I don't feel human anymore, mama / When am I ever gonna get that karma / You said was heading back down this way? / The knife inside my back feels so familiar / Reminds me of the real her / Cold and sharp pocket blade”).
When they heard this line in the original snippet, numerous fans started speculating that these lyrics about feeling betrayed was a reference to Bryan's split from podcaster Brianna LaPaglia. It was a highly contentious break-up, with the latter accusing him of emotional abuse and of trying to get her to sign a $12 million NDA.
In the chorus, Bryan admits he has some lingering trust issues from past relationships gone sour, sadly remarking how previous lovers have only been interested in his money.
But then we get a happy twist, as Bryan recalls falling in love with his now-wife, Samantha, in La Concha beach in San Sebastián, Spain, where they later got married (“All I want are your beautiful legs around me / On that Spanish beach where you found me”).
During the rest of the song, Bryan inventively describes the feeling of having to atone for past mistakes, relearn certain habits and overcome his niggling trust issues as ‘walking backwards’. His face is turned to the past, but he is doing his best to move forwards.
Heartbreakingly, he confesses that he sometimes felt like a dog that's been beaten too much. Now, though, he is much stronger and healthier, with ‘Backwards’ feeling like the turning-point, in many ways, of Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs.

“Well, I don't feel human anymore, mama
When am I ever gonna get that karma
You said was heading back down this way?
The knife inside my back feels so familiar
Reminds me of the real her
Cold and sharp pocket blade
-
And I don't trust anyone anymore, lover
They all want money or anything other
Than what's good and what truly stays
All I want are your beautiful legs around me
On that Spanish beach where you found me
For the rest of my earthly days
-
This is how you walk backwards
Everything I ever said, I said in reverse
Everything I evеr did, hell, what's it all worth?
Live and learn how to walk backwards
-
And I said plеnty things I didn't mean back then
I blame it on my thick skin
Like a dog that's beat too much
Nowadays, I don't shake and shiver
When it's simply time for dinner
My backward walk's enough
-
This is how you walk backwards
Everything I ever said, I said in reverse
Everything I ever did, hell, what's it all worth?
Live and learn how to walk backwards
-
And I forgive you for the things you did
The overrated underdog, the comeback kid
And I don't blame you for the things you did
My father taught me, keep it walking, always forgive
-
So, this is how you walk backwards
Everything I ever said, I said in reverse
Everything I ever did, hell, what's it all worth?
Live and learn how to walk backwards”
