Zach Bryan is opening up about how meeting his wife, Samantha, changed his life, with the ‘Something in the Orange’ hitmaker crediting her with making everything feel “lighter”.
While chatting to Matthew McConaughey as part of a wide-ranging conversation in honour of Bryan's new EP, Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, the Oklahoma native reflects on how transformative his relationship with Samantha has been.
Bryan fondly recalls running with the Bulls through the streets of Pamplona, and turning back to carry Samantha after seeing she was frozen to the spot. Bryan cites the memory of being with her and his closest friends in Plaza de Toros de Pamplona as one that he will cherish forever, “We're in this Spanish arena, middle of the summer, and the sun's shining down on us. We're all in our white shirts, and she looks at me and I hug her and I lift her up. For the first time in so long, I felt really needed, and I felt really comfortable, and I felt really lifted by that”.
He movingly goes on, “Truthfully, I looked at everyone and I was like, there's no way I can repeat this with anyone else ever for as long as I live. I'm never going to get that again”.
Bryan sheds light on the evening after that, and how he and Samantha had lots of heart-to-heart discussions, which ultimately helped him to work through some deeper issues.
The ‘Lodi When’ singer-songwriter muses, “That night, we spent time together and we talked about everything under the sun and I was like, ‘Wow, every like pain I'd ever felt, everything I'd ever like all this pressure was on me that summer’...I was on tour in Europe. I was really living terribly and I was drinking too much and I was making all these bad decisions, and all these things were going wrong. And it felt like as soon as I met Samantha, it changed. You know, something like a light switch. When I told her I needed to stop [drinking], she quit that day”.
He heartwarmingly adds, “Every single issue that I've ever had, she made better. You know, she made my life so much lighter. That's how I knew. And I've never felt like that with someone else. Everything I do, I want her there. Everything I...am, I want her to be a part of...I never thought you could feel like that about somebody”.
It's undoubtedly touching to hear Bryan speak so passionately about his love-story with Samantha, especially after we, as fans, have had a front-row seat to all the euphoric highs and crushing lows that have punctuated what's been a tumultuous few years.
Bryan has been open in recent weeks about how he realised he was drinking too heavily, something he also delves into with great clarity and sincerity in his chat with McConaughey.
When his new EP, Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, arrived last week, Samantha underlined how, more so than the music, she was simply proud of the person Bryan has evolved into, gushing, “I couldn’t be more proud of the man you are”.
Bryan and Samantha's romance is at the heart of this EP, with Samantha even singing on the heartfelt ‘Lodi When’, while Bryan's ‘Backwards’ is about the beginning of their story. It gives Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs a warm, hopeful hue, something that has arguably been absent from many of Bryan's past projects.
